ALL NATURAL, an exhibition showcasing the work of artists and fine artisans who incorporate natural materials in their work opens at Spectrum Art Gallery and Artisans Store (June 27 - August 10). The exhibit includes macro photography of the natural world and fine art and crafts using materials such as sea and river glass, encaustic, wood, feathers, spider web, egg tempera and casein. During the six-week show, the Gallery offers free events to the public including a Family Day, Sunday, July 20, (1-5pm) with Art and Nature Workshops, Storytelling, Music and a Scavenger Hunt. Spectrum is the newest expansion of the non-profit arts organization Arts Center Killingworth, whose mission includes providing opportunities for emerging and established artists to display and sell their work.

On July 31, 2014, Robert Richter will continue The Friends of Fort Trumbull’s presentation of “The Whaling City and the Sea”, by discussing Eugene O’Neill, one of New London’s most famous residents. Mr. Richter, a graduate of Connecticut College, is the Director of Arts Programming at the College. In addition, he consults for museums and historical societies on staff training, public program development, and the implementation of performance-based programs.

As an author, he has written many books on Eugene O’Neill. In 2001, he wrote Touring Eugene O’Neill’s New London, a guide which will introduce area residents and visitors to the local places connected with O’Neill’s life. His next book,
Eugene O’Neill and Dat ole Davil Sea, was a finalist for the 2005 Connecticut Book Award. In this book, Mr. Richter examines the influences on O’Neill of the maritime history of New London, his experiences in sailing and steamships, and his Provincetown experiences.

The presentation will take place in the Fort Trumbull Conference Center on 90 Walbach St., New London, at 7 p.m. The public is invited, but seating is limited. New members are always welcome. Refreshments will follow the presentation.

The newest unit of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) musical family will be featured at Concerts in the Park 2014 on Thursday, July 31, at Washington Park in the City of Groton. The new 22-member USCG Ceremonial Band will play a concert of patriotic and pop music under the direction of CWO Richard Wyman, Assistant Director.

Attendees should note that this week’s concert is on a Thursday evening, not the normal Friday evening. The concert is free and will start at the usual time, 6:30 p.m. However, there will be no intermission.

The concert series is co-sponsored and co-produced by Groton Utilities and the City of Groton Parks and Recreation Department.
