The Mystic & Noank Library Ames Room art exhibit for August 2014 features a local group of plein air artists. The artists meet weekly at a variety of locations in southeastern Connecticut, working in oils and watercolors.

The artists represented in the exhibit are: Karin Bastidas, Carmel Bourneuf, Mary Carey, Toby Hohenstein, Brenda Manning, Joyce Maurice, Janvier Miller, Ray O’Connell, Dan Potter, Betsy Broughton Shafer, Nina Stimson, and Peggy Traskos.

OUT OF THE BOX, an exhibition showcasing the work of fine artists who “break out” of the rectangular canvas, sculpt unique objects or shoot photographs of unexpected subjects opens at Spectrum Art Gallery and Artisans Store (August 22 - September 28) at 61 Main Street, Centerbrook, Connecticut. A Reception, open to the public to meet artists and enjoy wine and hors d’ouevres is Friday, August 22nd from 6:30-9pm. And on Saturday, September 13, Origami in the Gallery will be held from 11:30-1:30pm, $2 for materials and open to all, no experience required. Spectrum is the newest expansion of the non-profit arts organization Arts Center Killingworth, whose mission includes providing opportunities for emerging and established artists to display and sell their work.

Studio 33 Art and Frame Gallery is seeking original works inspired by a call to Pause for Beauty. This show is a remembrance to pause for the beauty around us; to stop and smell the roses, savor the moment and join with family and friends to celebrate Life and Beautiful Art.

Entries will reflect the artists’ unique view of what beauty is. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this should prove to be an interesting show. Works will be selected through a jury process. The show will run from October 1-31 with an opening reception Friday October 3 from 5-7:30 pm.

We are pleased to announce Carol Dunn as our guest juror. Carol is an award-winning printmaker, photographer and mixed media artist.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.

2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the Connecticut River Museum. In honor of this milestone, the Museum will feature the exhibit Reflections: 40 Years along the River. The exhibit will explore the story of the Museum and highlight the many topics that CRM has explored through exhibits, programs and other activities.

Members are invited to join us the evening of July 11 from 5:00-7:00 for an opening reception, held in conjunction with the Museum’s Annual Meeting. The exhibition will be open to the public daily until October 13.

The Avery-Copp House, located at 154 Thames St. in Groton, will be open to the public for guided tours through October 12. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and free to children under age 12.
The Colonial style house, built in the early 1800s, was Victorianized at the turn of the 20th century. It houses the story of an American family that lived there for 200 years. Furnishings are original and a testament to Yankee thrift, inventiveness and hard work. Two Victorian gazebos sit above the house on the terraced lawns overlooking the Thames River.
The house is open seasonally and by appointment year round. Events for families and the general public are offered throughout the year, including a Fall Garden Party, a Christmas Open House, Charles Dickens dramatic readings, tours and lectures.

Join in the spirit of the Connecticut River’s boat building heritage! Register with your family or a group of friends and build your very own CRM 12' Skiff. This boat design is inspired by the traditional small boats that have been built along the River for hundreds of years.

Boat building groups of up to 4 people may participate. Children over age 10 are welcome. All kit supplies will be provided and experienced boat builders will be there to assist you. You will leave with a constructed rowboat at the end of the weekend.

Two weeks before Flock Theatre stages its 2nd Annual Burning of Benedict Arnold Festival, get the story behind the story.

Derron Wood, Flock’s executive artistic director, will speak on New London’s historic lampooning of Benedict Arnold and the development of the new production.

The suggested donation is $5 per person. Light refreshments will be served.

Flock’s Burning of Benedict Arnold Festival will be Sept. 5 and 6, the 233rd anniversary of the attack on Groton and New London. Flock will stage historical performances at both the Hempsted Houses and the Shaw Mansion on the 6th.

The plays are written by Charles Traeger, who penned the popular “The Holly & the Ivy” living history performances eight years ago.
