Rhythm & Roots Festival

The 17th annual Rhythm and Roots Music Festival, featuring musical talents, dancing, food and family events, will be held at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, R.I. over Labor Day weekend.
The three-day, three-night celebration attracts about 15,000 fans from more than 20 states to a setting that includes 33 artist and five performance stages, dance workshops and family activities.
The gate opens at 3 p.m. Friday and music starts at 4 p.m. and goes non-stop until midnight across three stages. It all happens again from noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday. The Mystic & Noank Library Ames Room art exhibit for August 2014 features a local group of plein air artists. The artists meet weekly at a variety of locations in southeastern Connecticut, working in oils and watercolors.

The artists represented in the exhibit are: Karin Bastidas, Carmel Bourneuf, Mary Carey, Toby Hohenstein, Brenda Manning, Joyce Maurice, Janvier Miller, Ray O’Connell, Dan Potter, Betsy Broughton Shafer, Nina Stimson, and Peggy Traskos.

A Reception, open to the public to meet artists and enjoy wine and hors d’ouevres is Friday, August 22nd from 6:30-9pm. And on Saturday, September 13, Origami in the Gallery will be held from 11:30-1:30pm, $2 for materials and open to all, no experience required. Spectrum is the newest expansion of the non-profit arts organization Arts Center Killingworth, whose mission includes providing opportunities for emerging and established artists to display and sell their work.

Studio 33 Art and Frame Gallery is seeking original works inspired by a call to Pause for Beauty. This show is a remembrance to pause for the beauty around us; to stop and smell the roses, savor the moment and join with family and friends to celebrate Life and Beautiful Art.

Entries will reflect the artists’ unique view of what beauty is. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this should prove to be an interesting show. Works will be selected through a jury process. The show will run from October 1-31 with an opening reception Friday October 3 from 5-7:30 pm.

We are pleased to announce Carol Dunn as our guest juror. Carol is an award-winning printmaker, photographer and mixed media artist.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Avery-Copp House, located at 154 Thames St. in Groton, will be open to the public for guided tours through October 12. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and free to children under age 12.
The Colonial style house, built in the early 1800s, was Victorianized at the turn of the 20th century. It houses the story of an American family that lived there for 200 years. Furnishings are original and a testament to Yankee thrift, inventiveness and hard work. Two Victorian gazebos sit above the house on the terraced lawns overlooking the Thames River.
The house is open seasonally and by appointment year round. Events for families and the general public are offered throughout the year, including a Fall Garden Party, a Christmas Open House, Charles Dickens dramatic readings, tours and lectures.
