The New London Currach Rowers (NLCR) will host their annual regatta on Saturday, July 29th 2017.
The NLCR are the only team in Connecticut to row these currachs: traditional Irish fishing rowboats.
The boats can hold four rowers, but can be rowed by one person as well.
Originally these boats were made from a wooden frame, covered with skins, which were tarred on the outside. Today they are still built from a wooden frame, but covered with canvas, which is covered with black paint.
The NLCR are a member of the North American Currach Association (NACA), along with nine other teams.
The NLCR is expecting East Coast crews from Albany, Annapolis, Boston and Philadelphia to join the New London team at their regatta.
Ten different races will be on the program and each team can choose which race to participate in – or row in more than one. Each winning team will receive a gold, silver or bronze medal and one team will take home the regatta trophy. Last year the Boston team took the trophy home.
