    Birthday greetings, U.S. Coast Guard!

Yes, the grand ol' Guard is marking its 225th year, with some observances happening right here.

On Tuesday, New London's City Pier will be the site of a Navy salute to the Coast Guard will start at 1:30 p.m. and addresses by various officials. Visitors will hear a 13-gun salute and see some Navy and Coast Guard vessels on the river. It'll culminate in the cutting of a large cake, which was donated by Foxwoods.

The exhibition will run through Sept. 30, and its paintings include some showing cadets on the barque Eagle and some capturing Coast Guard stations in New England. COGAP uses art as an outreach tool for educating people about the Coast Guard. The artists who are members of this program donate their creations, helping to build a collection that now boasts about 2,000 works.

In conjunction with the show, about a dozen reproductions are on view at Groton's Municipal Building.

And Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery is showcasing its "New London Coast Guard Summer Exhibit" through Aug. 29. It has featured a series of receptions, the last of which will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7. Proceeds from commission on sales of the art will be donated to the planned Coast Guard Museum.
