As the world seems to spiral ever-rapidly out of balance, it's nice to stay grounded and focus on good things. Music, for example. And helping out our fellow citizens,is also a fine idea.

In this context, celebrate the latest Hoot for Hunger concert, which takes place Friday in New London's Washington Street Coffee House. The regularly occurring Hoots benefit the New London Community Meal Center and, as always, a superb lineup of local artists are donating their time and talent.

    Scheduled to perform are Hugh Birdsall (6 p.m.), Sue Mead (6:10 p.m.), Ben Charles (6:25 p.m.), Baird Welch-Collins and Emily Finkel (6:40 p.m.), Maggie's Guitar (6:55 p.m.), Coal Tattoo (7:10 p.m.), 5 Bean Row (7:25 p.m.) and Anna Lennard (7:40 p.m.) with an en masse finale at 7:55 p.m.

Hoot for Hunger, 6 p.m. Friday, Washington Street Coffee House, 19 Washington St., New London; free, all donations benefit New London Community Meal Center; (860) 437-0664.
