Memorial Day parades and vigils
Memorial Day is, of course, the holiday when people remember those have lost their lives while serving the U.S. in the armed forces. This region is honoring those souls and their legacies with parades and vigils and ceremonies this weekend.
SUNDAY, MAY 28
Coast Guard Band concert — 1 p.m., Fort Trumbull State Park, Walbach Street, New London; “America Remembers,” a program of music honoring all fallen members of the Armed Services; free;(860) 701-6826.
Pre-Memorial Day Candlelight Vigil — 7:30 p.m., Parade Plaza, State Street, New London; special tribute in memory of U.S. Army Sgt. James L. Campbell; luminaries available at 6:45 p.m.; if it rains, the ceremony will be in the train station.
MONDAY, MAY 29
Memorial Day Pre-Parade Breakfast — 7:30-9:30 a.m., Congregational Church of Salem Christian Community Center, 249 Hartford Road; $8 per person, $25 for a family of four or more, free for kids 5 and younger and military personnel in uniform; (860) 859-1211.
Taftville American Legion Memorial Day ceremony — 10 a.m., Memorial Park, corner of Norwich Ave.-Route 97 and South B Street; emembers 23 Taftville residents who died during wartime; ceremony will honor Joseph Carrignan.
Decoration Day in 1876 — 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Mystic Seaport, 75 Greenmanville Ave.; brief service and presentation for an 1876-style Memorial Day; free with museum admission; (860) 572-0711.
Norwich Memorial Day Parade — noon, St. Patrick's Cathedral, 213 Broadway Norwich; ceremony at the war memorials immediately after the parade.
Salem Memorial Day Parade — 10 a.m., Route 85 between Route 82 and Rattlesnake Ledge Road, Salem; memorial service follows.
Noank Memorial Day Parade — 10 a.m., Main Street, Noank; picnic 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Mystic Memorial Day Parade and Service — 2 p.m., Mystic VFW, 60 Stonington Road
East Lyme Memorial Day Parade — 2 p.m., Columbus and Haigh Avenues, East Lyme; rain or shine.
Voluntown Memorial Day Parade — 2 p.m., from Robbins Cemetery to the Veterans Monument, all on Route 138, Voluntown.
