Alessia Cara performs at Foxwoods
Using pop star Taylor Swift as a way to rise to stardom seems to be something that up-and-coming stars are taking advantage of these days. Take Ed Sheeran, who, after opening for Swift’s iconic Red Tour, became an instant hit in the States. Then consider Alessia Cara, a 21-year-old from Canada who, after being signed with Def Jam records, decided in 2015 to tweet to Swift, asking for an interview on camera. The tweet eventually landed Cara her own appearance on Swift’s stage for a stadium show in Tampa, Florida, then introducing her into the U.S. spotlight.
Since then and with the release of her 2015 anti-cool kid album “Know-It-All,” Cara’s act aligning with the awkward feelings of growing up, hating teenage parties and denouncing the “cool kids” seems to be working well. Her show at Foxwoods on Friday will showcase whether she’s still in that same mindset — but hopefully so. Her take on the struggles of adolescence has probably been a breath of fresh air for many teens.
Alessia Cara, 8 p.m. Friday, Foxwoods’ Grand Theater; $25-$45; 1-800-200-2882.
