Local artists to "hoot" for meal center

"Hoot" is a comical word with all sorts of connotations. Over the years, trying to write with positive entertainment value about the "Hoot for Hunger" benefit concerts — admirably in support of the New London Community Mean Center — I've explored every possible whimsical "hoot" joke.

Oh, yes: I've made owl puns, Blowfish japes and even invented ludicrous fake "hootenanny" etymologies.

The point is, I suppose, that the Hoot for Hunger shows have been ongoing — with massive success — for so long that I'm out of "hoot" jokes. Maybe that's for the best.

All you need to know is that, once again, several of the area's finest acoustic musicians will contribute time and talent for the cause. It takes place on Friday in New London's Spindrift Guitars shop. The lineup is: Hugh Birdsall and Tom Deedy (7 p.m.), Sherwood (7:15 p.m.), Lily Glynos (7:30 p.m.), Sue Mead (7:45 p.m.), Pat Daddona (8 p.m.), Lorain Ohio Simster (8:15 p.m.), Jim Carpenter (8:30 p.m.), and an all-star finale (8:55 p.m.).

Hoot for Hunger, 7 p.m. Friday, New London Community Meal Center, 107 State St., New London; benefitting New London Community Meal Center; free, donations encouraged; (860) 444-2112.
