Hygienic fest rolls into weekend #2

The Hygienic Arts XXXIX events roll into the second weekend with plenty of action.

    HYGIENIC PHOTOGIENIC IX

The Hygienic's annual Photogienic photograph scavenger hunt is on again, and this year the theme is fashion.

The idea is simple: photographers are given a pack of a dozen words all pertaining to fashion (which they received last Saturday) and will find ways to photograph each, which range from straightforward concepts such as "pose" or "pattern" to the conceptual such as "style" and "design." The resulting photographs will be hung for public viewing at Expressiones Gallery on Bank Street this Saturday.

The part of the scavenger hunt that Hygienic Director Sarah McKay says is most intriguing is the way in that different photographers photograph the same thing — almost like an insight into the psyches of those who participate.

    MAYFLY PLAYFEST

Being an active participant in the Hygienic's annual Mayfly Playfest sounds equal parts stressful and fascinating. Participants only have 24 hours to conceive an entire play from start to finish. That may sound easy enough, but when you're trying to coordinate plotlines, scripts, characters, lighting and everything else, it's sure to get a tad overwhelming.

The fun begins Friday night, when six playwrights will receive, by a random drawing, their group of volunteer actors and a director to work with over the next 24 hours, along with a set of rules and one lone prop. From there, the playwrights will go off to write their 10-minute plays over the next 12 hours, before presenting their scripts at 6 a.m. the next morning. Each playwright will use the remainder of the day to rehearse with their assigned groups before a final staged performance at 8 p.m. This year, a total of six groups will participate, and considering that their plays are set to hit the stage Saturday only, the event is one not to be missed.

    NAKED CANVAS

Who knew that bodypainting was a thing in New London? But the fact that the Hygienic is holding a competition titled "Naked Canvas" exclusively for the artform must surely be a sign that it is. So, too, is the fact that there are 25 body painters participating.

With just four hours, each of the body painters, who range from traditional painters and tattoo artists to actual body painters, must paint their naked model (and yes, some will be entirely nude) head-to-toe in eye-catching themes or designs. After the four hours is up, each of the 25 models will strut the cat walk in the Crocker House Ballroom to an audience of hundreds to show off their transformations. One will be proclaimed the winner.

Though last year was the debut of the competition, there was no lack in creativity. Themes included Indian goddesses, fairies, abstract designs, optical illusions, and space galaxies. But we're guessing that the designs showcased this year will be even more innovative than the last.

Spectators are invited to view the models and artists while painting is still in progress, though organizers from the Hygieinic ask that the public respect the models' personal space.

    NEW LONDON FASHION WEEK

The annual Fashion in the Ballroom extravaganza that's held in conjunction with the Hygienic show returns on Friday in the Crocker House Ballroom. Models will walk the runway while wearing the stylish creations of area designers — Iryna Kavalenka, FTM, Sect Noir, Anna Lucas Fashion, Reizer, Ruba Ruba, and C-Kin.

Hosting the event will be fashion coordinator Emmanni Martine, and on hand will be MC/comedian Dame FK. Melissa and Haley will perform as well.

And if you want to buy one of the designs? There will be an on-site boutique with samples of the pieces, and a full boutique will open at 5 p.m. Friday at the Expressiones Cultural Center, 84 Bank St., New London.
