Local roundup: Sawyer leads Whalers to season-opening win
New London - Collin Sawyer scored 29 points as New London opened its season with a 102-45 win over Killingly in a Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division boys' basketblal game on Friday night.
C.J. Parker had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Seth Lake and Harry Georges scored 10 points each for New London, wnhich led 26-9 after one quarter.
In other games:
• Landon Peabody had 14 points, seven assists and seven steals as Waterford opened its season with a 69-58 win over Plainfield in the ECC Medium Division. Connor Lewis had 10 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Mike Buscetto had 11 points and five assists for Waterford.
• Cody Calash had 28 points as Montville downed Stonington, 73-48, in the ECC Medium. Joel Greenwood scored 15 for Montville (2-0, 1-0). Robert Fry had 11 points for the Bears (0-2, 0-1).
• Norwich Tech lost to Cheney Tech in a Constitution State Conference game, 72-53. Jacob Sulik had 16 points, Mike Froscello scored 12 and Jared Neal had eight points and nine rebounds for Norwich Tech (0-2).
• Wheeler fell to Windham in its ECC Small Division opener, 81-56. Mike Dellaporta led Wheeler (1-1) with 20 points.
Girls
• Claire Hurley and Vanessa Kobyluck both scored 11 as Waterford edged Plainfield, 60-57, in the ECC Medium. Shea Spellman had 10 points for Waterford (3-1, 1-1). Julie Jordan had a game-high 27 points for the Panthers.
• Abby Stone and Catie Quaratella scored nine points each as Old Lyme remained unbeaten with a 44-35 win over Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Maddie Zrenda had eight points for Old Lyme (4-0).
• NFA jumped out to a 21-1 lead after one quarter and went on to beat Woodstock Academy 77-18 in an ECC Large Division game. Maya Bell had 14 points, Hailey Conley scored 13 and Mackenzie Burke had 11 points for NFA (4-0, 2-0).
• India Pagan had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as New London beat Killingly, 47-37, in the ECC Medium. Charee Osbourne had 14 points and seven rebounds for New London (4-0, 2-0) and Deanna McCarvell added nine points and five assists. Megan Bianchi scored 20 for Killingly.
• Tatyana Lafrance-Boyce had 22 points and seven steals as Stonington downed Montville, 51-31, in the ECC Medium. Margot Calmar had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Stonington (3-0, 2-0). Kiah Strickland had 10 points and five rebounds for the Indians (2-1, 1-1).
• Mary White had 17 points as Windham edged Wheeler, 51-47, in the ECC Small. Mackenzie Brayma scored 13 for Wheeler (1-3, 0-1) and Raven Houck had 12 points.
• Amy Roberts scored 18 points, leading Holy Family to a 23-20 win over Norwich Tech in a CSC game. Norwich Tech is 0-4.
