High school roundup: Stonington girls' basketball (5-1) bears watching
Westerly - Margot Calmar had 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Stonington High School girls' basketball team Saturday in a 59-37 victory over Westerly in the semifinals of the 31st Annual Westerly Community Credit Union Holiday Tournament.
The Bears advanced to meet Chariho in the championship game at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Chariho defeated Exeter-West Greenwich 50-9 in the other semifinal.
Taty LaFrance-Boyce added 21 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists for the Bears (5-1) and Cameron Dreher had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Stonington was 21-for-28 from the free throw line and outrebounded Westerly 39-17.
The Bears led 26-16 at halftime.
In other games:
• Deanna McCarvell finished with 20 points, five assists and five steals and India Pagan had 14 points and 11 rebounds as No. 4 New London defeated Thomaston 54-45 in the first round of the Appalachian Christmas Tournament at Notre Dame-Fairfield, breaking Thomaston's 19-game winning streak.
Charee Osborne added 10 points and eight rebounds for New London (7-0), which will play St. Joseph in the championship game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
New London is the defending Class M tournament champion and Thomaston is the defending Class S champion.
• Kaitlyn Berkel and Caitlyn Dittman each scored nine points in St. Bernard's 26-24 victory over East Lyme in the first round of the East Lyme Holiday Tournament. Following a 14-14 tie at halftime, St. Bernard shut out East Lyme in the third quarter to take a six-point lead. Theresa Durkee had eight points and four steals for East Lyme (1-4) and Maggy Powers eight points and eight rebounds. St. Bernard is 3-2. The tournament continues with the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. Monday, followed by the championship game at 7.
Boys' basketball
• Fitch's Eddie Volkerts was named Most Valuable Player of the Shoreline/ECC Challenge, finishing with 26 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals in the Falcons' 55-50 victory over Valley Regional. Ryan Reuling added a career-high 14 points for Fitch (4-1). Chris Jean-Pierre led Valley with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
• Connor Lewis had 12 points and 10 rebounds, powering Waterford past Old Saybrook 52-49 in the Shoreline/ECC Challenge consolation game. Kyle McComic added 12 points and Landon Peabody had nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Lancers (3-1). Owen Greene and Samir Cecunjanin each scored 11 points for the Rams.
• Steven Fletcher scored 24 points as Norwich Free Academy beat Stratford 47-44 in double overtime. NFA's Luis Rivera made a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime period. Fletcher was 5-for-6 from the line in the second overtime period. Brandon Drabinski scored 13 for NFA (2-2).
• Canton led 27-13 at halftime and went on to beat East Lyme 53-35. Cristian Brown led East Lyme (0-4) with nine points.
• DeAnte Bruton scored 17 points as Ledyard beat Xavier 47-42 in the first round of the Xavier Holiday Tournament on Friday Night. Mario Graham scored nine for Ledyard.
Wrestling
• Tommy Wynosky (132 pounds) and Ian Concascia (170) each went 4-0 with four pins as Montville split its matches at the RHAM Duals. The Indians defeated Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 61-15 and Morgan 51-27 and lost to Bristol Eastern 44-22 and Hand 44-35, finishing in fourth place. Windham won the tournament with a 49-25 victory over Bristol Eastern. Noah Caskey (106), Joel Morth (120) and Zach Looney (126) each won three matches for Montville (6-2).
• Waterford's Sam Lindblom (138 pounds) and Ben Pickowitz (195) had four pins each as the Lancers went 2-2 at the Law Duals. Waterford (2-3) beat Law 40-34 and Masuk 48-33 and lost to Foran 42-37 and Farmington 42-30. Dillon McCarthy (170) and Cody Cleary (220) also won four matches each and Justin Keating (182) had three wins for Waterford.
Fitch's Billy Goff won four matches, including two by pin, at 160 and teammate Daniel Benetiz (120) also went undefeated. Jarod Kosman (106) won three matches for the Falcons, who beat Bunnell 42-35 and lost to Foran (57-20), Gilbert (42-39) and Seymour (36-34).
• Ledyard went 3-1, beating host Ellis Tech (54-21), Old Saybrook-Westbrook (75-0) and E.O. Smith (60-12) and losing to Xavier (58-15). Daric Johnson and Josh Rahal went undefeated at 220 and 145 pounds, respectively.
