    High school roundup: Montville wrestlers win Casey Yates Invite

    Lebanon - The Montville wrestling team had four individual champions on Saturday en route to winning the Casey Yates Invitational for the second straight season.

    The Indians won with 225 points, NFA was second with 199, Pomperaug finished third with 165.5 and host Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech was fourth with 163.

    Winning titles for Montville were Joel Morth, who picked up a 9-7 overtime victory at 120 pounds, Tommy Wynosky (132), Austin Concascia (145) and Ian Concascia (170). Zach Looney (126) and Nick Laracuente (152) had second-place finishes and Noah Caskey (106) and Emanuel Diaz (182) finished third for Montville.

    In other matches:

    • Bo Nyguen (106 pounds) had the deciding win in two matches as No. 10 Ledyard won three matches during quad meet in West Hartford. Nguyen's pins in final bout gave the Colonels (13-2) wins over Middletown (37-30) and host Conard (42-36). Ledyard also beat Greenwich (42-27). Nguyen, Derek Shultz (120), Josh Rahal (145) and Daric Johnson (220) each went 3-0.

    • Waterford won two out of three matches at the Ellis Tech Duals, beating Branford (38-34) and Wolcott Tech (42-25) and losing to New London (40-34). Sam Lindblom posted three pins, including two at 138 and the other at 145, while Ben Pickowitz (195), Luther Wade (126) and Josh Rouisse (106) each earned two wins for the Lancers (11-8).

    • Fitch went 3-1 at the Spartan Duals in Meriden, losing only to host Maloney 48-34. The Falcons (7-8) defeated Enfield (47-30), St. Bernard (49-24) and Darien (51-18). Jarod Kosman (106), Billy Goff (160/170), Isaac Ervin (182) and Trent Evans (195) each went 4-0 for Fitch with Kosman, Goff and Evans recording three pins apiece.

    East Lyme also competed at the Spartan Duals and finished 2-2, defeating Darien (42-36) and Enfield (31-30) while losing to St. Bernard (48-33) and Maloney (63-15). Kyle Bernard (145) and Thomas Hillyer (220) each went 4-0 for the Vikings (5-10).

    Boys' basketball

    • DeAnte Bruton scored 20 points and had 11 assists as Ledyard beat Mt. Pleasant, R.I., 74-50. Phyllip Thomas had 18 points and eight rebounds and Mario Graham scored 10 for Ledyard (8-1).

    Girls' basketball

    • Hannah LeBeau scored 13 points and Theresa Durkee added eight in East Lyme's 67-36 loss to Canton. The Vikings fell to 2-9.

    Swimming

    • Jordan Legg won two events as Williams School went 1-1, beating Chase Collegiate 58-35 and losing to Canterbury School 49-42. Legg won the 200 individual medley in 2:15.13 and the 500 freestyle in 5:21.89. The 400 freestyle relay team of Josh Goldstein, Cyrus D'Arcy, Hartmut Doerwaldt and Legg finished second.

    Indoor track

    • Ledyard's Bryce Hedmen won the boys' 3,200-meter race in 9:55.63 at the Haddam-Killingworth Invite at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, lifting the Colonels to a fifth-place finish with 32 points (Bloomfield won with 46). Ledyard also got seconds from Michael Lopes in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and the 4x800 relay team of Hedmen, Christian Kuss, Josh Snow and Nick Monroe (8:58.2), and a third from its sprint medley team of Lopes, Kuss, Eric McCracken and Manny DeShields-Sanabria (3:53.75). In the girls' meet, Ledyard's Megan Brawner was second in the 1,000 (3:11.95) and joined Emily Kowalski, Brooke Scahill and Isabelle Mercer to palce fifth in the sprint medley relay (4:38.39).

    Fencing

    • Ledyard swept the boys' and girls' foil competition against East Lyme and St. Bernard. In the boys' competition, the Colonels beat St. Bernard 8-1 and East Lyme 6-3. The Vikings defeated the Saints 6-3. In the girls' foil, Ledyard downed St. Bernard 8-1 and East Lyme 6-3. The Vikings defeated the Saints 6-3. Ledyard beat St. Bernard 6-3 and lost to East Lyme 8-1 in the boys' epee. The Saints beat the Vikings 9-0. In the girls' epee, Ledyard defeated East Lyme 5-4 and lost to St. Bernard 5-4. The Vikings beat the Saints 5-4.

    • Hector Vargas went undefeated with a high score of 29, leading NFA to a sweep of Waterford and Fitch in boys' foil, NFA beat Waterford 8-1 and Fitch 9-0. Fitch defeated Waterford 6-3. In boys' epee, Waterford's Chris Pedersen went 5-1 with a score of 28 in a pair of 6-3 losses to Fitch and NFA, which also beat Fitch 5-4. In girls' foil, NFA's Abigail Wicheal went undefeated with a score of 30 in wins over Waterford 7-2 and Fitch 8-1. Fitch also beat Waterford 7-2. In girls' epee, Fitch's Maddy Rusk posted an unbeaten mark with a 30. The Falcons beat Waterford 8-1 and NFA 6-3, which defeated Waterford 5-4.
