    H.S. roundup: New London boys' basketball wins ECC Medium

    Plainfield - Collin Sawyer and Seth Lake made 13 of their team's 15 3-pointers as New London High School downed Plainfield on Saturday, 77-63, to clinch the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division boys' basketball championship.

    Sawyer had seven 3-pointers and scored 30 of his game-high 37 points in the first half for the Whalers (18-0, 9-0), ranked second in the New Haven Register Top 10 poll.

    Lake made six 3-pointers and scored 18, and Nabate Meets had 10 points and eight assists.

    Girls' basketball

    • Julia Strycharz made all five of her free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds as third-seeded Old Lyme beat No. 6 North Branford, 53-41, in the first round of the Shoreline Conference tournament.

    Old Lyme (16-5) will play No. 2 Cromwell in Tuesday's semifinals at Coginchaug (6 p.m.). Cromwell beat the Wildcats in their only meeting this season (69-39, Jan. 5).

    Maddie Zrenda scored 11 for Old Lyme, which made of 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

    Wrestling

    • Norwich Free Academy's Khaleed Exum-Strong defeated James Demaio of Simsbury 7-2 to win the 220-pound state title at the Class LL meet in Trumbull. Newtown won the team championship (282.5 points) for the second straight season. NFA finished sixth (121). NFA's other placewinners were Matt Foster (113, second), Tony Hong (160, third), Richard Crooks (heavyweight, fifth), and Patrick Mahoney-Balestracci (182, sixth).

    • Jarod Kosman (106) and Billy Goff (160) both earned second-place finishes for Fitch in the Class L tournamnent at Bristol Central.

    New Milford won its third straight L title with 264 points. Fitch finished 14th (69). Trent Evans (195) also finished sixth for Fitch.

    Indoor track

    • Sydnee Spruill of Fitch tied for second in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) at the State Open. Tolland edged Wilbur Cross 42-40 to win the team title.

    In the boys' meet, East Lyme's Joshua Leffingwell placed fifth in the pole vault (13-0) and teammate Gregy Atkinson was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.84 seconds). Conner Gralton of NFA was sixth in the 1,000 (2:34.43). Hillhouse narrowly beat Weston for the team title, 43-40.

    Cheerleading

    • Montville scored 118.45 points to win the Medium Divisioin title at the ECC championships. New London, which won the Colby Sousa Team Spirit Award, was second and Waterford third.

    Fitch (109.8) won the Large Division, followed by Ledyard and NFA. St. Bernard (72.2) won the Small Division, Wheeler was runner-up and Tourtellotte third.

    Fencing

    • Noah Hysong went undefeated and scored 25 out of a possible 30 points to lead Ledyard past St. Bernard (6-3) and East Lyme (9-0) in the boys' foil. East Lyme topped St. Bernard, 5-4. Ledyard beat East Lyme in epee (6-3), while East Lyme beat St. Bernard (5-4) and St. Bernard beat Ledyard (5-4).

    Stephanie McClardy went unbeaten in the girls' foil to pace Ledyard past St. Bernard (9-0) and East Lyme (7-2). East Lyme beat St. Bernard, 6-3. Ledyard beat St. Bernard in the epee (6-3). East Lyme beat Ledyard (6-3), and St. Bernard beat East Lyme (6-3).

    • Bacon Academy beat both New London (7-2) and Griswold (6-3) in the boys' foil in a tri-meet. Griswold edged New London in that event, 5-4. Bacon also beat New London (6-4) and Griswold (7-2) in the girls' foil. New London beat Griswold in that event, 7-2.
