    High school roundup: NFA gymnasts finish second in Class L

    Pomperaug - Norwich Free Academy finished second in the CIAC Class L gymnastics tournament at Saturday.

    The Wildcats finished with 132.675 points, trailing only first-place Southington, which finished with 139.125 points. Glastonbury was third with 131.9 points.

    Taylor Churchill of NFA finished first in three of the four individual events. She scored a 9.450 in the vaulting competition, a 9.625 on bars and a 9.5 in the floor exercise and finished second on the balance beam with 8.75 points. Anna Ciriello, Quinn Sinay, Rhiannon Wilbur, Jocelyn McNally and Hope Nazario also competed for the Wildcats.

    • Stonington finished sixth and Old Lyme seventh in the Class S meet, which was won by ECC champion Woodstock Academy with 147.625 points. The Bears had 120.325 points and the Wildcats had 119.4. Abigail Van Essendelft scored an 8.3 on the vault to lead Stonington while Ashley Detuzzi scored an 8.475 in the floor exercise for Old Lyme. Tessa Henningsen, Catherine Casseta, Emily Novak, Meredith Hallisey, Hannah Cappizzano and Abigalo Contino also competed for the Bears while Mary Bolles, Anna Donato and Anna Muckle also participated for the Wildcats.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Old Lyme outscored No. 7 Cromwell 14-4 in the fourth quarter, pulling away for a 49-33 win in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament.

    No. 2 Old Lyme (17-4) hosts No. 6 Coginchaug, a 42-39 winner over No. 3 Old Saybrook, in a semifinal on Tuesday. Drake Gavin had 16 points, Jacob Ballachino scored 11 and Zac Abramsson had six of his eight points in the fourth quarter for Old Lyme.

    Indoor track

    • Fitch's Sydnee Spruill broke the school record in the high jump during the New England Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Friday night at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Spruill, who finished 12th, cleared 5 feet, 3 inches, breaking the old record of 5-2 set by Kim Callahan in 1998.

    Hockey

    • Andrew Gagnon scored two goals while Tyler Faulkner added one goal and two assists as NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon/Stonington/Lyman blanked Newtown on Friday, 6-0. Logan Morin, Jack Hall and Hunter Desaulnier also scored goals for the Redhawks (10-9) while Mitchell McCullough added two assists and Anthony Zeng stopped 20 shots in goal to earn the save.

    Fencing

    • Two local schools won team titles during the ECC championships at Griswold. The NFA boys were victorous in foil as were the Fitch girls in epee. Bacon Academy won team titles in boys' epee and girls' foil. Individually, NFA's Reuben Deglin won the boys' foil, NFA's Connor Provost the boys' epee, Ledyard's Quinn Duwelius the girls' epee for the second straight year and Bacon's Alyson Litwin the girls' foil.
