    H.S. football capsules/Week 3

Chase Speller (1) and the Waterford Lancers have lost tight games to two state playoff teams a year ago (Windham and NFA). Waterford will attempt to win its first game on Friday when the Lancers visit Killingly at 6:30 p.m. (Dana Jensen/The Day)

    Friday's Games

New London at Fitch, 6:30 p.m.

Records: New London (1-1, 1-1 ECC Large); Fitch (1-1, 1-0)

Last week: New London lost to Bacon Academy 34-18; Fitch defeated East Lyme 27-7

Outlook: This is the home opener for Fitch, which snapped a 14-game losing streak last week ... and looked good doing so. Quarterback Rob Duncan hit Luke Letellier with several key completions, Parker Gibson and Jonathon Johnston ran the wall for more than 150 yards combined and the Fitch defense earned four sacks. The Falcons looked considerably crisper than the Whalers, who fell behind 21-0 to Bacon Academy eight minutes into the game. New London's pass defense, which allowed 199 yards to Bacon's Sean Kelly last week, must improve or Fitch has a chance at two straight wins.

NFA at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: NFA (1-0, 0-0 Large); East Lyme (0-2, 0-2)

Last week: NFA defeated Waterford 20-13; East Lyme lost to Fitch 27-7

Outlook: NFA opened its season with a difficult win at Waterford, riding the legs of quarterback Jawaun Johnson, who ran for 217 yards. NFA coach Jemal Davis likely seeks improvement in all phases this week, while counterpart Rudy Bagos would love to see fewer mistakes. East Lyme, blanked in its opener against New London, had numerous chances to score last week, but committed several errors, unforced and otherwise, in losing to Fitch. The Vikings play their third straight home game and face the balance of the season on the road.

    Plainfield at Montville, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Plainfield 1-1, 0-1 ECC Small); Montville (1-0, 1-0)

Last week: Plainfield lost to Killingly 34-12; Montville was idle.

Outlook: Montville's best laid plans of preseason – put its fortunes in the hands of quarterback Jon McCray – never materialized. McCray has left school and enrolled at NFA, leaving the Indians inexperienced at an important position. And yet Montville's resolve was evident in its season opener, with a win at home over Stonington. Its defense appears improved. The Indians may rely on it for a while, at least as the offense rediscovers itself.

    Waterford at Killingly, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Waterford (0-2, 0-1 ECC Small); Killingly (1-1, 1-1)

Last week: Waterford lost to NFA 20-13; Killingly defeated Plainfield 34-12

Outlook: Ultimately, the Lancers are the old line from Bill Parcells: You are what your record says you are. Which is 0-2. And yet they've played well in both losses, indicating this season still holds promise. It must start here. If nothing else, the Lancers have quite the weapon at kicker in junior Spencer Hoagland, who kicked field goals of 43 and 36 yards last week and barely missed a 50-yarder.

    Windham at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Windham (2-0, 2-0 ECC Small); Stonington (0-2, 0-1)

Last week: Windham defeated Griswold 22-14; Stonington lost to Ledyard 37-0

Outlook: It has been a very disappointing start for the Bears, who have one touchdown in two games. It doesn't get easier here. Windham, already 2-0 in ECC's Small Division, can take a major step toward being The Team To Beat with a victory here. The Whips have edged Waterford and Griswold, likely two of the division's most talented teams, thus far.

    Enfield at Valley/Old Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Enfield (0-2); Valley/OL (0-2)

Last week: Enfield lost to Granby 41-0; Valley/OL lost to Morgan 40-0

Outlook: It was roughly 10 months ago coach Tim King and his staff celebrated the upset of Ansonia in the state championship game. And now the Warriors aren't merely winless, but haven't scored a point to date this season, outscored 53-0. Enfield could be the elixir, having been outscored 79-14.

    Saturday's games

Ledyard at Bacon Academy, 10:30 a.m.

    Records: Ledyard (2-0, 0-0 ECC Large); Bacon (2-0, 2-0)

Last week: Ledyard defeated Stonington 37-0; Bacon defeated New London 34-18

Outlook: This should be one of the state's best games. Bacon was dominant at times in last week's win at New London, using quarterback Sean Kelly, several receivers and fleet running back Peter Kazibwe to score 34 points. Now the Bobcats will face what may be the ECC's best defense, still yet to surrender a point this season. Bacon coach Erik Larka called the win over New London "the biggest in program history" last week. Can the Bobcats summon the requisite emotions necessary to take down another one of the league's Rockefellers? Ledyard's offense, which sputtered at times in the opening week win over Cranston East (R.I.) was much improved last week.

Harding at Thames River, 1 p.m. (East Lyme)

    Records: Harding (2-0, 1-0, CSC); Thames River (1-1, 1-1)

Last week: Harding defeated Rye Country Day 30-23; Thames River lost to Prince Tech 66-38

Outlook: Thames River certainly hasn't had trouble scoring points in its new league, the Constitution State Conference, amassing 80 in two games. This is a difficult home opener, however. Harding defeated Prince Tech 45-13 two weeks ago. Prince scored 66 against Thames River last week.
