    Two-time champ Zuczek cruises into ECC boys' singles final

    East Lyme — St. Bernard's Alex Zuczek moved closer to winning his third straight Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' tennis single championship on Thursday, winning his quarterfinal and semifinal matches in dominating fashion at East Lyme High School.

    The top-seeded Zuczek didn't lose a single game in defeating No. 8 Steven Gervase of Lyman Memorial in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Jacob Steiger of Stonington in the semifinals.

    Zuczek, a junior, will play No. 2 Camiren Carter of Waterford in Friday's 4 p.m. final, also at East Lyme. Carter defeated No. 7 Taylor Huhtanen of Woodstock Academy 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before beating No. 3 Eric Gu of East Lyme 6-2, 7-6 in the semis.

    The doubles final will also feature the top two seeds. No. 1 Mukesh Kurumbail and Davon Chen of East Lyme will play No. 2 Evan Burdsall and Dylan Vitale of East Lyme, also at 4 p.m. Kurumbail-Chen rallied to defeat No. 4 Adam Pinch-David Perez of Waterford 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the semis while Burdsall-Vitale cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 3 Sean Bessette-Ryan Sealy of Stonington.

    In the girls' tournament, Stonington continued to dominate play in the ECC tournament on its home courts. Top-seeded Gabby Dellacono advanced to the singles championship while the doubles final will be an all-Stonington affair.

    Dellacono, a freshman, defeated No. 9 Wendy Bessette of St. Bernard 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Jolin Cheng of Woodstock 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. She will play defending champion Michaela Abate of St. Bernard in Friday's final at 3 p.m.

    Abate, a junior and the No. 3 seed, beat No. 22 Samantha Cote of Fitch 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and No. 7 Charlotte Johnstone of Stonington 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. Johnstone had upset No. 2 Olivia Lyon of Ledyard 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the quarters.

    The Bears' top-seeded doubles team of Claire Morehouse and Phoebe Townsend will play teammates Hannah Middleton-Krancberg and Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz for the title. Morehouse and Townsend beat No. 4 Catherine Yoa and Stacey Tasoulas of Waterford 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals while Middletown-Krancberg and Fratoni-Jaskiewicz, the No. 3 seed, beat teammates Cassie Onorato and Holly Foster, the 10th seed, 6-4, 6-3.
