    East Lyme High School adding eight to its Sports Hall of Fame

    East Lyme — East Lyme High School will induct eight new members into its Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, Dec. 4, at Flanders Fish Market.

    The Class of 2016 includes: Sarah (McTurk) Macleod (1999), Dennis Long (1976), Scott Borden (1980), Carl Reichard (coach), Christine Ashburn (1984), Paul Christensen (1982, coach), Pete Walker (1987) and Edward Dzwilewski (contributor). Ashburn and Dzwilewski will be honored posthumously.

    The dinner begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40 per-person and includes buffet dinner and social hour. Contact David Putnam at (860) 739-5828 for more information or to reserve tickets.

    Following are capsule looks at the eight inductees:

    Sarah (McTurk) Macleod — A four-year starter in girls' soccer, finishing with 68 goals and 28 assists ... was a three-time first-team Eastern Connecticut Conference all-star, a 1998 all-state pick and The Day's 1998 Player of the Year... played collegiately at Marist and Tampa and currently lives in Pomfret where she is the junior varsity girls' soccer coach at Pomfret School.

    Dennis Long — A two-sport star in baseball and basketball, earning ECC all-star honors in both sports as a junior and senior, and earning first-team all-state honors in both sports as a senior ... played both at UConn and was drafted by the Texas Rangers in baseball's 1980 amateur draft. ... played in both Rangers and Mets organizations ... lives in Norwich and is co-owner, general manager and pitching coach for the Mystic Schooners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

    Scott Borden — A two-sports star in baseball and basketball ... was a four-year starter in basketball, earning ECC all-star honors three times and first-team all-state honors two times. ... led Vikings to 1979-80 ECC title and still holds the school's career scoring record. ... was a three-year starter in baseball, earning All-ECC honors twice as a pitcher. ... currently resides in Toano, Va.

    Carl Reichard — Spent 40 years as a chemistry teacher, retiring in 2016, and has been the girls' indoor and outdoor track and field coach since 1988 ... his teams have won a combined 15 ECC championships, one State Open title, nine state class titles and 11 state runner-up finishes. ... has been selected as Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Association three times and was the National Coach of the Year in 2013. ... resides in Lebanon.

    Christine Ashburn — A three-sport star in field hockey, basketball and softball. Was a four-year varsity pitcher in softball, finishing with a career record of 56-12 with four no-hitters and 27 shutouts. ... still holds school records in innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and wins. ... was a three-time All ECC and Class L all-state pick and The Day's 1983 Player of the Year. ... played collegiately at Rhode Island, finishing her career third in ERA, first in complete games and second in innings pitched.

    Paul Christensen — Has been the varsity boys' soccer coach at his alma mater since 1988 and has a career record of 328-149-55 ... his teams have won 10 ECC championships, the 2002 state championship and three state runner-up finishes ... has been The Day's Coach of the Year four times and the CHSCA Coach of the Year twice. He was a finalist for national coach of the year in 2014. ... resides in East Lyme.

    Pete Walker — A two-sport start in basketball and baseball, earning first-team All-ECC and all-state honors in baseball in 1986, finishing 10-0 as a pitcher and batting .410 ... was The Day's 1986 Player of the Year. ... attended UConn-Avery Point, where he is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and spent two years at UConn, where he was team MVP in 1989 with a 7-2 record and 1.85 ERA. ... drafted by the Mets in 1990 and has enjoyed an 18-year professional career ... he is currently pitching coach for the Toronto Blue Jays and resides in Quaker Hill.

    Edward Dzwilewski — Was an integral part of East Lyme youth sports for over 40 years as a volunteer with Little League, Babe Ruth and youth football. ... helped renovate the baseball field as a member of the Viking Baseball Association ... was architect of the East Lyme Chain Gang for over 25 years in football ... served on the Parks and Recreation Commission for over 25 years and received numerous awards, including the Service to Youth Award and the Lifetime Achievement Awards from Parks and Rec.
