    H.S. roundup: No. 9 Ledyard wrestlers go 4-0 at own Watkins Duals

    Ledyard — Ledyard High School's wrestling team swept all four matches while hosting the Jerry Watkins Colonel Duals on Saturday.

    The No. 9 Colonels (19-2) beat Branford 61-12, South Kingstown (R.I.) 44-16, Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 54-21 and Westerly 64-18.

    Jake Millbach led the way with four victories at 160-pound weight class while Mike Sullivan (182), Danny Contino (220), Richard Mullaney (285), Joey Millbach (106), Tyler Miller (113) and Bo Nguyen (120) also swept their matches.

    Fitch went 2-2 in the same meet, defeating Westerly 42-37 and Branford 51-24 while losing to Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 37-36 in a criteria tiebreaker (most wins) and South Kingstown (R.I.) 60-23. The highlight for the Falcons (9-9) was provided by junior Jarod Kosman, who recorded the 100th win of his career.

    In other matches:

    • Montville senior Emanuel Diaz (182) won four matches at the Morgan Duals, including his 100th career win. Montville beat East Haven 42-34 and Morgan 47-16 and lost to Hand 41-26. Montville also defeated a team comprised of wrestlers from other schools 68-6 because Maloney could not attend. Joel Morth (132), Noah Caskey (126) and Sam Kuri (145) won four matches for Montville (6-3). Also, Ian Anderson (138), Zack Navarrette (152), Nick Laracuente (160), and Nick Tibbetts (220) each won three matches.

    • Tim Li had two pins and a hard fought loss for Norwich Free Academy, which beat E.O. Smith, 45-35, and lost to Ellis Tech, 72-6, and Ponaganset (R.I.), 73-6. The Wildcats are 3-10. 

    • East Lyme went 2-2 at the Granby Duals, defeating the New Haven co-op 31-30 in a criteria tiebreaker and Goodwin Tech 33-0 while losing to Pomperaug 54-12 and Suffield Academy 36-30. Greg Stewart went 4-0 for the Vikings (2-20).

    Boys' basketball

    • Mikey Buscetto scored 26 points and Colin Shannon added 12 points and six steals to lift Waterford past Plainfield 53-45. Jeff Evans had a team-high 14 rebounds for the Lancers (8-3).

    • Brian Bergeron scored eight points in St. Bernard's 70-26 loss to Immaculate in a nonleague game. The Saints fell to 3-8.

    • East Lyme lost to Brookfield in a nonleague game, 58-52. Dev Ostrowski led East Lyme (7-4) with 17 points.

    Hockey

    • Andrew Bannon scored twice and Bryan Guetens and Hunter Desaulnier had a goal and two assists each as the Redhawks beat Barlow 7-3. Ben Amor (eight) and Spencer Flynn combined for 11 saves, Brayden LoVetere and Maren Lancaster had a goal and assist each, Colin Larkin scored and Dylan Heald, Brendan Green and Ken Beguhl had assists for the Redhawks (7-4).   

    Indoor track

    • Fitch's Madison Powe was second in the girls' high jump at the SCC Coaches Invitational with a jump of 16-5 1/2, and teammate Ryana Kelsey was fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.58). In boys' results, Fitch's Tom Readett was fourth in the 1,000 (2:43.32) and the 3,200 (10:17.94), Tyler Nelli was fifth in the high jump (5-10) and Alex Schwindt was sixth in the pole vault (11-0).

    • Herman Winston won the 300 in 36.84 seconds and took second in the 55 in 6.64, pacing Ledyard to third overall with 46 points at the Haddam-Killingworth Invite on Friday. Zach Salomonson was fourth in the 300 (38.60) while Collin Wiltshire was sixth in the 55 hurdles (8.38). In the relays, Andrew Laconico, Salomonson, Berkely Wachtmann and Nate McCracken placed second in the 4x400 (3:46.28), the 4x800 team of Sean Healy, Ian Kamperschroer, McCracken and Brendan Thornton took third (8:49.57) and the sprint medley foursome of Jacob Maranzano, James Smith, Laconico and Kamperschroer took third (3:56.95). In the girls' competition, Claudio Jackson finished third in the pole vault (9-6).

    Boys' fencing

    • Ledyard swept the foil competition in a tri-meet with East Lyme and St. Bernard, defeating the Vikings 6-3 and the Saints 5-4. East Lyme beat St. Bernard 6-3. Ledyard's Sam Lathi was 6-0 with a plus-20 point indicator. East Lyme defeated St. Bernard 6-3 in epee.

    • Fitch went 2-0 in foil, beating Waterford 8-0 and NFA 7-2, but all three schools went 1-1 in the epee competition. Fitch's Camden Mason was undefeated in foil with high score of 30 while teammate Connor Rousseau went undefeated in epee with a high score of 29.

    Girls' fencing

    • Ledyard swept the foil and epee versions of a tri-meet, defeating East Lyme 7-3 and St. Bernard 5-4 in foil, and both teams 5-4 in epee. East Lyme defeated St. Bernard 6-3 in foil while St. Bernard defeated East Lyme 7-2 in epee. Ledyard's Meghan Plourde had the highest point indicator (plus-20) in foil while teammate Riley Colgan had the highest point indicator (plus-13) in epee.

    • Fitch swept both foil and epee competitions, defeated Waterford 8-1 and NFA 5-4 in foil and both schools 8-1 in epee. Fitch's Emmy Powdrill went undefeated in foil with a high score of 30 and teammate McKenna Mason went undefeated in epee with a high score of 30.

    Swimming

    • Patrick Nowak, Maxwell Cartier and Samuel Heilig won two events each as Fitch/Stonington beat NFA 94-69 in an ECC meet on Friday. Nowak won the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.27) and 100 butterfly (1:00.27), Cartier won the 50 freestyle (26.81) and 100 freestyle (59.14) and Heilig won the 500 freestyle (5:46.08) and 100 backstroke (1:14.32). John Marcolina won the 200 freestyle (1:55.38) for Fitch (4-1, 4-1) and Keegan Reck, Matthew Planchon, Joe Vignato, Ian Sanok and David Magowan helped the Falcons win all three relays. Jeffrey Ng won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.39) for NFA (2-3, 2-3).
