    Class LL

    Hillhouse 78, East Hartford 58

    Joseph Kasperzyk Jr. and Davon Warner scored 19 points apiece as defending champion Hillhouse won its state-record 24th CIAC championship on Saturday night before 8,186 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

    Christian Adams had 13 points and five rebounds for the Academics (28-1) and Mekhi Warren added 13 points.

    Hillhouse won despite Byron Breland, one of their best players, being suspended for the game after getting two technical fouls in Thursday’s semifinal win over East Catholic.

    Kingsley Cockburn and Austin and Justin Nwafor all scored 11 for the Hornets (23-4).

    The Academics scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed.

    East Hartford came back to tie it at 7 with 4 minutes, 19 seconds left in the first quarter. Warren’s layup at 2:38 put Hillhouse ahead to stay as it closed the period with an 11-1 run.

    Tyler Douglas made the first of two free throws to give the Academics a 42-32 lead with 4:25 remaining in the third quarter. They led by double digits the rest of the game with James Daniels making a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to give them their largest lead (78-55).

    Class S

    Trinity Catholic 61, Westbrook 52

    Dutreil Contavio had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks as sixth-seeded Trinity Catholic used a late push to put away top-seeded Westbrook.

    It was the seventh state title for the Crusaders (20-6), which became the first team to win a championship in all four divisions.

    Dimitry Moise had 20 points and six rebounds for Trinity and Peter Galgano had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

    Liam Bell had 23 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the White Knights (25-3). Cory Muckle added 15 points, four rebounds and four steals.

    Trinity led by a point late in the fourth quarter when Muckle had a steal at halfcourt to start a three-on-one Westbrook break. Galgano tied up Bell as he attempted a layup, and the Crusaders got the ball back via the possession arrow.

    Contavio had a dunk seconds after the turnover as Galgano’s steal started a 9-0 run.

    Girls

    Class M

    New Fairfield 41, Bacon Academy 38

    Kristen Teklits had 25 points, seven rebounds and four steals as fourth-seeded New Fairfield ground out a win for its third state title.

    Sydney Gouveia had eight rebounds for the Rebels (24-4).

    Jocelyn Luizzi had 13 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the No. 11 Bobcats (20-7).

    New Fairfield made just 3 of 12 field goals in the second half, including just one in the fourth quarter. It led 34-33 with 1:08 remaining and finished by making 8 of 12 free throws.

    Class S

    Canton 60, Thomaston 51

    Emily Briggs had 24 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals as the Warriors defeated the Bears for the title for the second straight season.

    Abigail Charron had 15 points and six assists for third-seeded Canton (23-4), which shot 47.9-percent. Belle Magna added 10 points.

    Casey Carangelo had 15 points, 14 rebounds and five steals for the No. 5 Golden Bears (23-5), which was playing in their fifth straight final.

    Canton pulled away early in the game with an 11-2 run it started late in the first quarter. Briggs’ layup put the Warriors ahead, 8-7, with 2:02 left in the period. She followed with a jumper and closed the quarter with a 3-pointer to extend Canton’s lead to 15-9.

    Charron opened the second quarter with a layup. The Warriors led 30-18 at halftime.
