H.S. softball: ECC quarterfinals, semifinals set for Wednesday
Quarterfinal round matchups are set in the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament, which has revised its schedule (due to the forecast for heavy rain on Thursday) and will play its quarters and semifinals on Wednesday.
At Veterans Field in Niantic, fourth-seeded Stonington will play No. 5 Fitch at 1 p.m., followed by No. 1 NFA against No. 9 Tourtellotte at 3:30. The winners will then meet in the semifinals at 7 p.m. At Griswold, No. 2 Griswold plays No. 7 Plainfield at 1 p.m., followed by No. 3 Waterford vs. No. 6 Lyman Memorial at 3:30. Those winners will meet in the semis at 7 p.m.
The championship game is still scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. at Griswold.
In Tuesday's first round:
• No. 9 Tourtellotte scored unearned runs in the first and third innings and knocked off No. 8 East Lyme 2-1. Megan Nolan, Mya Delesdernier and Nikki Marsh had doubles for East Lyme (9-12).
In other games:
• Hannah Smith pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Norwich Tech beat Kaynor Tech 9-0 in a Constitution State Conferfence tournament quarterfinal. Vanessa Gumbs had two hits, drove in two runs and scored three times and Kalli Campbell drove in three runs for the Warriors (17-4).
• Angie Venditti had three of East Lyme's 12 hits as the Vikings beat Waterford 9-6 in the regular-season finale for both teams. Venditti had a pair of triples and drove in three runs and Lydia Swan had two hits for East Lyme (9-11). Rachel Miller had three hits for Waterford (13-7).
• New London beat Grasso Tech 21-4. Bria Fielding, who doubled twice, Jaelynn Potter and Jasmine Silva had three hits each for New London (4-15) and teammate Anaya Vega singled and doubled. Ashley Cambisaca and Sophie Green had two singles each for Grasso (1-16) and teammate Erin Blake singled and tripled.
• Cameron Dreher raced home on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning as Stonington beat Chariho, R.I., 3-2. Dreher led off with a single, moved to second on a fielder's choice and went to third on a fielder's choice by Trinity Lennon. Sarah Flakus had an RBI and Lennon had two hits for the Bears (15-5).
• Grasso Tech lost to O'Brien Tech 17-2 in a CSC game. Ashley Cambisaca had two hits and Elisa Lebron doubled for Grasso.
• Old Lyme's Audrey Gavin was named a second team All-Shoreline Conference selection. Gavin, a junior, batted .453 and was 19-for-19 in stolen base attempts as well as pitching for the Wildcats. Freshman teammate Maddie Cann received honorable mention.
