Day state coaches' poll: No. 1 Darien hosts No. 2 St. Joseph on Saturday

It's just the third week of the high school football season, yet one of the state's biggest games has already arrived.

Darien is the number one team for the second straight week of The Day's state coaches’ poll. St. Joseph is number two.

The two Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference powers clash at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Darien.

Darien (2-0) mauled McMahon 47-0 last Friday for its 27th straight win. The coaches made the Blue Wave a unanimous pick (13 first-place votes) for a second week in a row.

St. Joseph (2-0) overwhelmed Fairfield Warde 52-13 last Saturday. Four voters ranked it second.

Darien has beaten the Cadets the last three years.

Southington (2-0) received five second-place votes and remains third after thumping Simsbury 35-0 last Friday.

Cheshire (2-0) received three second-place votes and leapfrogged Ansonia (2-0) at number four, the only movement in this week’s poll. The Rams impressed voters by going on the road last Friday and winning a thriller over Norwich Free Academy, 35-29.

Ansonia received the other second-place vote.

New Canaan, Windsor, Masuk, Greenwich and West Haven round out the top 10.

NFA (1-1) is the only area team receiving votes and slipped to No. 15 despite going toe-to-toe with fourth-ranked Rams.
