No. 1 Darien routs No. 2 St. Joseph 42-10

Darien — Darien's defensive line harassed St. Joseph all game Saturday, keeping the Cadets' explosive passing game in check in a 42-10 rout between the top two teams in The Day's Top 10 state coaches football poll.

It was the 28th straight win for the No. 1 Blue Wave (3-0), the two-time CIAC Class LL champions.

Darien's Drew Evanchick and John Lochtefled (defensive ends), Christian Evans and Charlie Zuro (defensive tackles) and Mike Neary (DE-DT) overpowered the Cadets (2-1) up front.

St. Joseph averaged 377.5 yards of offense and 45 points in its first two games.

The Blue Wave defense held the Cadets to 171 yards.

Mitch Pryor ran 22 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns for Darien. Jack Joyce completed 19 of 29 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown and ran four times for 78 yards.

Patrick Burke had nine catches for 123 yards and a score, Andrew Lucas had four carries for 70 yards and a TD, and Tyler Herget recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score for the Blue Wave.

Summers completed 11 of 28 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown for No. 2 St. Joseph. Jesse Bike added five catches for 85 yards and a score for St. Joseph.

The Cadets began the season with a 38-35 win over four-time defending Class L champion New Canaan, then the top-ranked team in the GameTimeCT.com/New Haven Register media poll.
