Montville — It seemed a juicy enough storyline: Owen George, the Montville resident who opted to attend the Science & Technology Magnet High School in New London, returns to his hometown under the Friday night lights, now the quarterback of the most storied team in the region.

Except that, well, the Whalers had bigger issues than their sophomore quarterback’s trip home.

They hadn’t won a game in two months.

And so even in the wake of New London’s 46-21 win to snap a six-game losing streak, George’s plight was met with mostly a yawn.

“The last thing I was thinking about,” New London coach Juan Roman said.

“We haven’t won in weeks,” George said.

So there.

George did quite well, too, passing for 163 yards and four touchdowns during a game that wasn’t as easy as the final score may suggest.

George, who late in the game hurt the finger that kept him out for a few weeks this season, threw two scoring passes apiece to Elijah Parker and Gio Lopez. New London took an early 20-0 lead, making it look as though this game might be a candidate for running time by the second half.

That’s when the Indians (3-5) rallied with 21 straight points to take a 21-20 lead.

Quarterback Ryan Douchette scored on a 4-yard run before Nick Angell scored on a 50-yard fumble return. Suddenly, it was 20-14. On New London’s next possession, Emmanuel Mayfield picked off George and returned the ball to the 10, setting up Douchette’s second scoring run.

The Whalers managed to score on the last play of the first half on Jacob Commander’s 4-yard touchdown run to take a 26-21 lead.

“We had pretty good momentum, but that’s obviously not what we wanted,” Montville coach Tanner Grove said. “It did take some of the wind out of our sails. But we still had it at a one-score game at halftime, which wasn’t a bad place to be.”

New London’s defense stuffed Montville in the third period and eventually scored the game’s next touchdown. Lopez picked off Douchette and returned the ball 33 yards for a score.

Montville followed with its second fumble on a kickoff — the Indians did so in the first period leading to a New London touchdown — setting up George’s second touchdown pass to Lopez, who has 12 receiving touchdowns this season.

Nick Fleetwood also scored for the Whalers late.

“I do believe it is biblical that winning is better than losing,” Roman said. “But at the same time, we’re 2-6 and not going to the playoffs. So I don’t want to make this more than it is. But what excites me is the kids all talking about being in the weight room (Saturday morning) at 7:30.”
