Darien knocks off top-ranked Greenwich, 31-22, to win third straight CIAC Class LL title

Stamford — Jack Joyce completed 11 of 24 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns and ran 20 times for 113 yards and a score as Darien beat top-ranked Greenwich 31-22 on Saturday at Boyle Stadium to win its third straight CIAC Class LL title and ensure that there will be a new No. 1 in The Day's final state coaches’ poll.

Tyler Herget had four catches for 66 yards, including a sensational diving one-armed catch, for the No. 6 Blue Wave (12-1). T.J. Cornacchia also caught a 23-yard touchdown.

Mitch Pryor scored on a 3-yard run for Darien and Austin Hagander kicked a 35-yard field goal.

Gavin Muir completed 15 of 34 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns for Greenwich (12-1). Henry Saleeby (4 yards) and Jael Negron (41 yards) caught the touchdowns, and Zach Moore added field goals of 25 and 37 yards.

The Cardinals’ loss gives Ansonia the opportunity to finish number one. The second-ranked Chargers (12-0) play No. 3 St. Joseph (11-1) in Monday’s Class S final at Cheshire High School.

The Blue Wave beat St. Joseph 42-10 on Sept. 23. They had been No. 1 all season until a 27-0 loss to New Canaan on Thanksgiving. Starters Brian Minicus and Joyce were suspended for that game after turning themselves into the New Canaan Police the day before in connection with a Nov. 6 assault.

The poll is scheduled to be announced Tuesday night.

Fourth-ranked Middletown and No. 5 Shelton lost their respective quarterfinal games.
