    Kosman, Caskey, Commander earn top seeds for State Open wrestling tourney

    New Haven — Three local wrestlers, Fitch's Jarod Kosman, Montville's Noah Caskey and New London's Jacob Commander, have been awarded No. 1 seeds for the 2018 CIAC State Open tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    The four state class meet champions in each weight class earned seeds 1-4 based on criteria that included previous success at the state level and any head-to-head meetings this season.

    Kosman won the Class L championship at 113 pounds last week while Caskey (132) was victorious in Class S and Commander (195) won in Class M.

    They are among 25 local wrestlers who have qualified to compete.

    The other local seeds are Waterford's Logan Smith (No. 2, 106), Fitch's Dakota Grover (No. 2, 220), Montville's Nick Tibbetts (No. 3, 220) and Ledyard's Richard Mullaney (No. 4, 285).

    All finalists from last week's class meets received byes into the second round while qualifiers who placed between third and sixth will compete in the first round.

    Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 3:15 Friday, when the first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be completed. Wrestling continues on Saturday with consolation rounds starting at 10 a.m., with the championship semifinals scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. The championship and consolation finals will be held simultaneously at 5:15 p.m.
