Ledyard blanked by Woodstock in ECC Division II showdown
Ledyard — To think that his team was on a nine-game winning streak, too. And yet Bill Glenney arrived at Blonders Park on Wednesday with a suspicious feeling.
“It started with the Fitch game the other day,” Glenney was saying of his soccer team at Ledyard High School, the one playing for the outright Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II boys’ title.
“For us to go down 2-0 and come back with 23 minutes left and win in OT was awesome,” Glenney said. “But it didn’t feel like us. Even today coming in, I had a weird feeling like we had one of these games coming. We got our (butt) kicked. Lots of little things. Too slow, too lackadaisical. One of our captains just said it looks like we’ve become too comfortable, we just show up and expect to win games.”
Glenney was right on all counts, particularly the part of the body the Colonels got kicked.
Woodstock Academy tied Ledyard for the lead in Div. II with a 3-0 victory. The teams split he season series and have one loss in the division, meaning that if Woodstock (Bacon and Waterford) and Ledyard (Bacon remaining) win out, they’ll share the division championship.
Ethan Holcomb, Eric Phongsa and Matt LaBounty scored for the Centaurs.
“We didn’t really have any energy today. They knew what was on the line, known it for a week,” Glenney said. "They knew this was the game. Win this game and the rest of the season can be what it is and you’re going to hang a banner. Now you’re forced with going to Bacon on their field and win that game. At that point, we’re sharing a title if Woodstock wins out. The way they played today, I don’t know if they’re losing to Waterford or Bacon.”
Woodstock led 1-0 at halftime and wasn’t threatened much near its goal the entire game.
“If you had told me we’d be 10-2 at the 12-game mark with our schedule I would have said you’re crazy,” Glenney said. “Woodstock, Waterford, East Lyme, Stonington, Fitch. Not easy. … It’s great we’re 10-2, but one of those losses is a big loss for the division. But if we can beat Bacon we can still hang a banner and kind of save things.”
