In Connecticut, all marriages are equal

Concerning the letter, "Same-sex marriages don't produce kids," (Nov. 16), the author is correct; they don't "produce" children, because children are not a product. There is no requirement anywhere that says that a couple must be married to have a child; they don't even have to be a couple. The author explains that raising a child is a "fringe benefit" of being married, a contribution to society that cannot be made by same-sex couples. Guess what? Same-sex couples and individuals that choose to have children must be committed to those children before they have them. There are no accidents.

The author then chooses to take on marriage equality further. He then refers to same-sex couples stating "…they can call their relationship whatever they like…" Well, I am in a long-term loving same-sex relationship raising a child and I choose to call that relationship marriage, so does the state of Connecticut. If you don't like gay marriage, then don't get gay married, but don't think that your straight marriage is superior to a gay one, because in this state it's not. We don't have to agree on the topic, but we do have to be equal. After all, it's the law.
