Investing in museums is the wiser choice

Connecticut's museums are stewards of the identity and achievements of Connecticut's residents. They provide inspiration, power economic engines and anchor their communities. They are gathering spaces, forums for debate and delight, gateways to the world. Whether a historical society preserving community memories or a science center providing vital education, these museums teach us, our children and our visitors what Connecticut is.

Connecticut is home to 760-plus museums and historical organizations, generating nearly $192 million in direct spending with a total impact of $402 million-plus on the state economy.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's budget endangers these nonprofits' survival. The proposal to cut millions of dollars from economic and community development means corresponding cuts in service, accessibility and sustainability for museums. State funding for regional tourism districts and Connecticut Humanities translates into fewer grants for field trips and collections care, not to mention national visibility for the gems of Connecticut's cultural landscape. This proposal jeopardizes access to and protection of our heritage.

The New England Museum Association stands with Connecticut Humanities in urging citizens and legislators to reject a Malloy budget that is damaging to our past and our future.
