This Vietnam veteran remembers the hurt

In my 67 years, I have often thought about writing a letter in response to something that I read in The Day. However, I never did - until now. This letter is in response to the letter, "Vietnam vet treatment is often exaggerated," (March 15).

I do not know where the writer of this letter gets all of his information, except for the article and poll that he refers to. I do know that articles are opinionated, and that polls can be slanted.

I served two tours in Vietnam, and I can tell you that the things that the veterans discussed did happen. I have first-hand knowledge of this. And yes, there were anti-war colleagues that were stupid enough to spit, throw drinks of all kinds, say all kinds of disheartening things to soldiers who were returning from combat. The looks of some people, when they stared at you like you were a criminal, were the worst.

I do not remember where I took off from or landed when returning from Vietnam; it could have been from a military base. However, how does this letter writer think that returning soldiers got home to their loved ones? We all had to fly on a commercial airplane, using an airport like everyone else.
