Setting record straight on Weicker, income tax

    xxxxx

Your editorial, “NIH right to honor Weicker for backing AIDS treatment in 1980s,” (April 14), was well written and extraordinarily well deserved by our former governor and senator. However, I must add to your comments about the personal income tax to complete the record.

I was in attendance at the fundraiser for candidate Lowell Weicker in a greatly cleaned warehouse in Essex when, during the Q&A, he was asked, “If elected, will you institute a personal income tax?” His response was, “I have repeatedly said that instituting a personal income tax would be like throwing gas on a fire. However, until we get to Hartford and see what the real status of the budget is, all bets are on the table.”

It should be noted that after balancing the budget, all surplus funds in ensuing year were supposed to be place in the Rainy Day Fund and as you pointed out, never were.
