Department of Correction gender blender blunder

I write in response to the article, “Department of Correction takes action in wake of sexual assault allegations at Niantic,” (July 25).

Sexual assaults under definition of law do occur and are probably more than reported. Prior to 1990, the position of housing unit officers was classified as “gender specific.” In early 1990, the prison population exploded and the commissioner re-classified all Department of Correction positions as “non-gender specific” putting opposite sex staff in housing units. This move was challenged by the union and denied.

Whenever an allegation of sexual misconduct is made by an inmate, the Department of Correction would respond by throwing a cup of water in hopes of dousing the flame.

Correction's officers are responsible for the care and custody and must constantly monitor and observe inmates during normal activities to include recreation, changing clothes, toilet use or any other behavior. If the Department of Correction really wants to correct this problem, they would start by keeping the rooster out of the hen house.
