Connecticut stands proud welcoming the afflicted
I am so proud to live in Connecticut today! I am so grateful that our elected officials have not given in to fear, scapegoating and collective punishment in the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris last week. Unlike Texas, Alabama and a number of other states, the Nutmeg State will not hold all Syrian refugees responsible for the terror wrought by one of their countrymen in those attacks.
After a weekend of bloodshed, terror and fear in France that has the world on edge and will have far-reaching implications for U.S. foreign and domestic policy, I applaud The Day for publishing the beautiful photograph of a Syrian man and his daughter kneeling on the Greek beach in today's paper (Nov. 17,). "We made it," they seemed to say. Their relief and gratitude is so clear and their sadness at all they left behind is equally palpable.
For those who harbor any doubts, the photograph reminds us of all we have in common — our instinct to seek freedom, safety and opportunity for our children and our need to live without the daily threat of violence.
