Avery Point gallery is worth saving
A few weeks ago I and 300 others attended the next to last opening show at the Alexey von Schilippe Art Gallery at Avery Point, a consistent happening for 24 years − www.averypointarts.uconn.edu − “next-to-last” because UConn decided to close the gallery. I also noticed the new “Pay by Phone” parking signs along the public seaside circle for the 17 public spaces, “New parking rules at UConn-Avery Point irk residents,” (May 14).
It was the local people who saved the Brandford House from a developer in the 1980s. We saved access to that wonderful Groton resource. Then the current director opened the gallery, supported by donations from the local community. Closing it can't be because of the cost. I wonder which administrator wants a seaside office. Tens of thousands of art lovers have enjoyed the Branford House, but no more after July unless we tell the UConn administration, "No!" And now they nickel and dime us to look at the Avery Point Light House or watch the sunset along the brick sculpture path, restored by local contributions.
UConn Administration, you are ungrateful and short sighted! Unless we all speak up, June 10 will be our last chance.
