East Lyme Police Dept. needs right oversight

The issue of an independent police department appears to be a non-issue. The need to separate from the Resident State Trooper Program to an independent police department in East Lyme makes financial and leadership sense. How it is implemented and progresses is an issue.

A police commission ordinance as proposed by the town attorney is a proposal doomed to failure. A first selectman as chairman of the Police Commission basically leaves the town in the same status as it is now. An ex-officio non-voting first selectman member except to break tie votes is a better plan.

A commission voted on by the voters is better for the town, rather than one appointed by the Board of Selectmen. This new Police Commission needs to be as unbiased as possible with no influence from outside agencies.

This commission will be hiring the chief of police for a department that needs leadership, not coziness. The duties are too important. Follow Connecticut State Statute with no deviation.

The Town of East Lyme, its police department, merchants and visitors deserve the best without political influence.
