Future water quality Groton project's focus

The article, "Groton City deciding on $54 million water treatment plant upgrade," (March 11), is certainly a subject of interest effecting the future well being of that area. Much of the interest in the presentation appears to be associated in the maintenance, appearance, and structural requirements of the system. However, more importantly, the emphasis in the upgrade of the plant should be directed more on the assurance that the excellent drinking water quality currently available in that system is expected and designed for the future generations. The last water treatment plant upgrade was completed over 50 year ago. During this time, the environment has been subjected to a host of new materials, chemicals, micro-organisms and pathogens that can adversely affect future drinking water quality. This parameter is the most important subject underway in the city evaluation of the proposed upgrade, and that future generations can expect that drinking water quality currently described in the Groton system will continue based on all the available evidence at this time.
