Close votes and school costs in North Stonington

The legislative body of North Stonington voted "no" to the Board of Education budget, yet the same budget, with no changes will find itself before the voters again Dec. 18. I have heard many reasons for this − lack of communication with voters, right after a holiday weekend, the budget too low and defeated by 10 votes are just a few.

I believe taxpayers are very aware of financial situations in federal, state and town governments and realize taxes will be going up in years to come. This year’s BOE budget seems to deal with contractual raises and benefits, while items that have to do with students are lowered or eliminated. The zero percent budget for five out of six years doesn't seem to have hurt students’ performances. The last six years have been minus percent for people on a fixed income.

Adjustments to school board policies may hold an answer to help with their budget. Maybe out-of-town teachers start paying tuition for their kids attending here, or institute a furlough like Ledyard or revisit contract negotiations.

Oh, the defeat by 10 votes? The school project won by three votes. But that was OK? Please vote again.
