Sacrificing one's soul to achieve one's goals

I read with interest the article, “In backing Moore, Republicans are failing the moral test,” (Dec. 10). It often seems today that the desire to achieve one's goals outweighs all else, steamrolling the quaint concepts of honor and decency. We have seen this attitude play out in sports, finance, politics, etc., to the point that it appears engrained at the elite levels of many endeavors.

This tendency has certainly become obvious in politics, as evidenced by the support for, and the lack of shame shown by, both President Trump and Moore. Voters who are willing to compromise their values in support of such figures are not unique to Alabama; they reside here in our own community.

A long-time friend whose beliefs have turned to Catholic fundamentalism (she believes the current Pope is too liberal) is a staunch supporter of President Trump. She praises him on Facebook as if he is a pillar of Christian virtue. Apparently the bragging by President Trump about how he can, and has, gotten away with groping unsuspecting women is a factor she is willing to overlook, along with his general un-Christian like statements and policies.

As long as he continues to profess conservative beliefs, he can do no wrong.
