Soulless political calculus drove Trump policy

As someone who has spent her career in early childhood, I protest separating Latino children from their parents. The effects of trauma on them can have lifelong consequences. They have arrived with their parents, not as illegals but as desperate refugees asking for shelter because of the violence in their countries that threaten their lives.

Thanks to President Trump, the legal Ports of Entry are deliberately closed or slowed so their only choice has been to cross from Mexico illegally, where the parents were promptly arrested and separated from their children. This policy, though since suspended, was unnecessarily cruel and without mercy. It was also racist.

In place of a heart, Trump has a pollster who tweeted him that the base likes this policy. This encouraged him to suggest returning all arrivals without even hearing their cases. That this is unconstitutional doesn’t bother this president, a “wannabe" dictator. He is without ethics or morality. We can now add without a soul.

Once America was a light unto the world. When the blight of “Trumpism” ends, can we make America great again?
