    Local roundup: Conn advances to final of Camel/Cadet Classic

    New London - Zuri Pavlin scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds as the Connecticut College men's basketball team beat St. Joseph's of Brooklyn 60-54 on Saturday night in the Camel/Cadet Classic at Coast Guard Academy's Roland Fieldhouse.

    Coast Guard was beaten by Worcester State in the other game, 58-51.

    The tournament concludes today at Conn College's Luce Fieldhouse with Coast Guard and St. Joseph's playing in the consolation at 2 p.m., followed by the final between Conn and Worcester State at approximately 4 p.m.

    Lee Messier and Isaiah Robinson each scored 11 points for Conn (3-3).

    Kevin Alvarez, coming off the bench, led Coast Guard (4-2) with 17 points and six rebounds and David Anderson had seven rebounds.

    • UConn-Avery Point lost to Mass Bay, 70-68. Keith Porter scored 30 points and had 10 rebounds and five steals and Ryan Wallack had 21 points and five steals for the Pointers (3-8).

    • Mitchell College dropped its New England Collegiate Conference opener, falling to Elms College 84-68.

    Donovan McClean scored 21 points, Parris Hill had 14 points, Devonta Mosley scored 11 and Alan Morgan had five assists for Mitchell (1-4).

    Jerry Buchanon had 29 points for Elms (3-5, 2-0).

    Women's basketball

    • Mairead Hynes scored 24 points and had 17 rebounds as Connecticut College beat St. Joseph's of West Hartford in a nonleague game, 71-61.

    Carlee Smith had 14 points, Liz Malman scored 10 and Jenna Lovett came off the bench to score eight points with eight rebounds for the Camels (6-1).

    • Coast Guard built a 29-16 halftime lead and went on to beat Wellesley 54-43 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Dani Knox had 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, Meghan Fornaro scored 10 and Torie Sutherland had nine points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard (2-3, 1-1).

    • Elms beat Mitchell College 65-48 in the NECC. Amanda Garcia had 16 points and nine rebounds and Diamond Thomas scored 13 for Mitchell (1-5, 1-2).

    Women's hockey

    • Michaela Igo had a goal and an assist as Connecticut College beat St. Michael's in a nonleague game, 4-1.

    Jane Pagano, Cassie Hunter and Kate Kohl also scored, Katherine Chester made 15 saves and Anna Bleck and Stephanie Izzi had assists for Conn (5-0-3).

    Men's hockey

    • J.C. Cangelosi of Connecticut College tied the game with 3:11 left in regulation as the Camels and Colby skated to a 5-5 tie in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

    Joe Birmingham scored twice and Mike Martinez and Tim DiPretoro also had goals and Brian Belisle had two assists for Conn (2-5-1, 2-3-1).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard's Darlene Sao won the 200 IM in 2:10.02 at the preliminaries of the Gompei Invitational at WPI. Kaitlyn Toth was second in the 100 butterfly in 59.85 while the Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Patti Eidenire, Groton's Jackie Kokomoor, Caitlyn Gever and Darlene Sao placed second in 1:40.58.

    Men's swimming

    • Ben Morseth of Coast Guard won the 200 IM in 1:56.62 and the 200 backstroke in 1:55.80 at the preliminaries of the Gompei Invitational at WPI.

    Senior Christian Brindamour, the defending national champion in the 50 freestyle, won the event with a time of 20.50.

    The Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Brandon Ledford, Brindamour, Morseth and Ross Garrett placed second with a time of 1:26.01 while the 400 medley relay team of Morseth, Elliot Vanderen, Ryan Buys and Brindamour placed second with a time of 3:33.62.
