    Conn men advance to NESCAC hockey semis

    New London — Senior J.C. Cangelosi scored the game-winning goal in overtime, as Connecticut College rallied for a 4-3 victory over Hamilton College Saturday in the New England Small College Athletic Conference men's hockey tournament quarterfinals.

    The Camels will play in the NESCAC semifinals for the first time in program history when they face No. 4 Williams either Friday or Saturday at Amherst. No. 2 Amherst will play No. 8 Tufts in the other semifinal. Tufts upset No. 1 Trinity 2-1.

    Brian Belisle's goal with 48 seconds left in the third period sent the game to overtime.

    Tim DiPretoro, who scored two goals in the second period, and Joe Birmingham assisted on the game-winner. Birmingham also set up Belisle's goal.

    Goalie Tom Conlin made 26 saves for the third-seeded Camels (14-9-2).

    Women's hockey

    • Ariana Borque scored with over four minutes left in overtime as No. 5 Bowdoin rallied to stun No. 4 Conn College, 3-2, in the NESCAC quartersfinalsw. Bowdoin (11-9-5, 7-7-2) scored twice in the final six minutes of regulation to force overtime. Ashley Anctil and Julie Beattie both scored for the Camels (12-10-3, 7-2-2) and Kelsie Fralick had 38 saves.

    Women's basketball

    • Third-seeded Coast Guard Academy fell behind early and never recovered, suffering an 85-74 loss to second-seeded Wheaton College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The defeat ended CGA's winning streak at 12 straight. The Bears swept the two regular season meetings. Meghan Fornaro led the Bears (19-8) with 24 points and seven rebounds while Gill Gerton had 14 points and Torie Sutherland added 11.

    • Avery Point finished its season with an 80-46 loss to Bunker Hill Community College in the Region 21 semifinals. Briana Padewski had 17 points and six rebounds for the Pointers while Carynn Bartolucci had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Marissa Moncata added 11 points.

    Men's basketball

    • All 11 players scored for St. Thomas More in an 80-38 win over Worcester Academy. Ryan Peterson led the way with 17 points while Stephen Millhaven had 12 points and Sean Hoehn added 10 points and five assists for the Chancellors (28-4).

    Wrestling

    • Senior All-American Nate Giorgio and junior Mike Shermot earned spots in the semifinals while six other Coast Guard wrestlers advanced to the second day at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional at Roger Williams. Giorgio (36-0) registered a pair of pins to earn a spot in the 133-pound semifinals, defeating Cortland's Paul Fields in the first rond (2:08) and Williams' Dan Evangealkos in the quarters (3:11). He will meet No. 5 Tyler Keene of Springfield in today's semis. Shermot, No. 3 at 174 pounds, pinned Trinity's Joe Gerish (3:16) and beat Ithaca's Jason White 6-5. He will face No. 2 Shaun Gillen in the semis. Matt McAllister (141), Mike Georgio (149), Chris Sullivan (157), Mike Palomba (165), Marc Wagner (185) and Mark Howard (heavy) each won two matches apiece to remain alive in the consolation bracket.

    Indoor track

    • Coast Guard's 4x800-meter men's realy team set a school record and placed seventh as the top Division III team at the All-New England Meet at Boston University. The team of Brett Foster, Andrew Scheffey, Ben Chapman and Andrew Ireland finished in 7:42.07, breaking the old mark of 7:46.36 set in 2008. Foster and Ireland are just freshmen. In addition Coast Guard's 4x400 men's relay team of James Dawkins, Joe Kelly, Kelcey Smith and Ben Hannon also earned All-New England honors by placing eighth in 3:19.04.

    Conn College didn't place in the men's 4x800 relay, but the team of Connor Trapp, Brad DeMarco, Billy Barnes and Ben Bosworth did set a school record in 7:46, breaking the old mark they set at last week's New England Division III meet by 12 seconds.

    • Conn College's women's distance medley relay team of Kim Bolick, Amanda Jacobsen, Bell Franz and Ashely Curran placed sixth in 11:59.70, the second fast time in program history, to earn All-New England honors while Curran broke her own school record in the 3,000 (10:02.32) by 13 seconds.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Conn College dropped its season opener, allowing Roger Williams to rally from a four-goal deficit to post a 9-8 decision. Briggs Barton scored three goals and Jeff Smith added two goals and an assist for the Camels.

    • Coast Guard, making its Division III debut, lost to Merchant Marine 19-9. Junior Robert McKenna had three goals while junior Justin Huemme and freshman Matt Huemme each added a goal and an assist for the Bears.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Tina Balzotti scored the game-winning goal at the one minute, 59 second mark of the second overtime, lifting Conn College past Babson. Balzotti finished with three goals and an assist while Taylor Thomas had five goals and an assist and Annie Cornbrooks had three goals.

    • Coast Guard's rally fell short, losing its inaugural game to Eastern Connecticut 9-8 in double overtime. Niki Kruger had four goals and Tori Borges had two goals and an assist for the Bears. East Lyme's Paige Schneider scored for the Warriors and Maggie Bodington had the game-winner.

    Baseball

    • UConn evened its record at 4-4 overall with a 7-0 shutout of nationally-ranked Kennesaw State. Anthony Kay allowed just two hits in eight innings and Blake Davey and Max McDowell each homered while Vinny Siena went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
