Only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, but Salem Boy Scout Troop 123 had eight scouts earn the honor this year.

The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest achievement in Boy Scouts, and all eight scouts fulfilled requirements including earning at least 21 merit badgets and demonstrating leadership, service and outdoor skills.

Each also completed a service project that will help their community long-term.

All eight scouts were honored at a ceremony on Aug. 13. Benjamin Bennett, Matthieu Bernier, Joshua Lopez, Brody Monarca, Benjamin Morrow and Troy Stillwell were in attendance, and Christopher Bouchard and Samuel Pimintel were also recognized. Their projects included clearing new nature trails, construction projects for area nonprofits, and various projects for local schools.
