Preston residents can enjoy concert before town meeting Thursday

Preston — Residents are being asked to gather Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a town meeting to discuss whether to add a second resident trooper and review a proposed $3.56 million capital bond project, but residents also are being encouraged to arrive early for a pre-meeting show.

The Preston Plains Middle School Band and Chorus will hold its winter concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Preston Veterans’ Memorial School gymnasium, where chairs will remain set up for the town meeting at 7:30 p.m. The concert, with an estimated 70 student participants in band and chorus, is expected to last about 30 minutes.

At the town meeting following the concert, residents will discuss the proposal to spend up to $47,000 to hire a second resident state trooper for the remainder of the current fiscal year. They also will discuss a proposed $3.56 million five-year capital plan that includes purchasing 11 school buses and three smaller student transportation vehicles, five Public Works Department vehicles, two firetrucks and an emergency response vehicle. Improvements to both town schools and the purchase of firefighter breathing apparatus also is included.

The total projected cost of the capital package is $3.477 million, not including bonding costs, which would add another $82,419 to the package.

Both town meeting issues will be adjourned to a Feb. 6 referendum vote.
