Preston residents approve new bleachers for elementary school

Preston — Voters Thursday approved a plan to use funds left over from replacing the gym floor at Preston Veterans’ Memorial School to purchase new bleachers for the gym.

Voters approved the request 36 to 23 to spend up to $35,000 from the capital plan to replace the bleachers with new ones that would better meet federal handicapped-accessibility standards.

The town’s $3.65 million capital plan, approved by voters in a Feb. 6 referendum, included $118,000 to replace the gym floor. The project, completed during April vacation, cost $81,000.

Superintendent Roy Seitsinger then asked the Board of Finance for approval to use much of the remaining funds to purchase new bleachers. The original bid for the floors included an alternative package to add the new bleachers, as well, but it needed town meeting approval since the bleachers were not discussed in the original town meeting on the full capital plan, Board of Finance Chairwoman Melissa Lennon said.

The bleachers are expected to take six to eight weeks to arrive, and could be installed this summer.
