RCDA member embroiled in CMEEC indictment resigns

New London — Edward DeMuzzio, one of the five members of the Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative indicted on federal corruption charges, resigned Tuesday from the board of the Renaissance City Development Association.

RCDA Executive Director Peter Davis said DeMuzzio, through his attorney, sent an email announcing his resignation. DeMuzzio is not likely to be replaced until the RCDA’s next annual meeting.

DeMuzzio is among the group of individuals charged following a two-year investigation into CMEEC-hosted trips to the Kentucky Derby for CMEEC officials, their families, vendors and public officials. They face charges of conspiracy, theft from a program receiving federal funds and aiding and abetting the theft from a program receiving federal funds.

DeMuzzio was a Groton Utilities representative to the cooperative’s board of directors and had resigned from both the Groton Utilities commission and the CMEEC board following a local Groton City Ethics Commission investigation in 2017.

DeMuzzio had previously resigned as the treasurer for the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut.
