Ørsted, Eversource tapped for offshore wind project off Long Island

New York — Ørsted and Eversource, who have partnered to deliver offshore wind power to Connecticut and pledged investments to New London and State Pier to support future projects, were tapped Thursday by the state of New York to deliver 880 megawatts of electricity to Long Island.

Sunrise Wind farm, 30 miles east of Montauk Point, will deliver power to Long Island by 2024.

Combined with the selection Thursday of an 800-megawatt Equinor project, Empire Wind, to power New York City, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's annnouncement marks the nation's largest approved offshore wind procurement to date. The state has committed to harness 9,000 megawatts of electricity from offshore wind farms by 2035.

Denmark-based Ørsted, which bought Block Island Wind Farm developer Deepwater Wind last year, also was picked in June to deliver offshore wind power to New Jersey.

Ørsted-Eversource's Revolution Wind farm south of Martha's Vineyard will inject 400 megawatts of electricity into Rhode Island and 300 megawatts to Connecticut by 2023.
