    For New London girls' basketball, a two-point conversion

    New London - Charee Osborne had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the New London High School girls' basketball team on the night the Whalers raised their state championship banner from last season and New London held off Stonington 50-48 Tuesday in a matchup of previously unbeaten teams.

    Stonington, led by 32 points and four steals by junior guard Taty LaFrance-Boyce - LaFrance-Boyce was 18-for-19 from the free throw line - trailed just 22-20 at halftime in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division game and pulled within 49-48 with 49 seconds remaining. Margot Calmar added 17 rebounds for the Bears (4-1 overall, 2-1 in the Medium Division).

    Deanna McCarvell had 15 points and six assists for New London (6-0, 3-0), the defending Class M and ECC Medium champion, and Jada Lucas added 10 points.

    In other games:

    • Theresa Durkee had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists to help East Lyme to its first win of the season, 40-30 over Fitch in the ECC Large. Maggie Powers had 12 points and 10 rebounds for East Lyme (1-3, 1-2) and Hannah LeBeau added five points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Sofie Clarke had nine points for Fitch (1-3, 0-2) and Brianna Robinson scored eight.

    • Mia Brennan scored 14 points and Waterford won the consolation game of the Hand Holiday Tournament, beating Haddam-Killingworth 52-40. Vaness Kobyluck added 13 points and Kayla Jean-Pierre 11 for Waterford (4-2). The Lancers trailed 9-4 after the first quarter, but came back to lead 21-18 at halftime. Hand defeated Cheshire to win the title 50-32.

    • Hailey Conley had 13 points and Cebria Outlow scored 12 as Norwich Free Academy downed Ledyard 62-28 in the ECC Large. Olivia Lane added 12 points for NFA (5-0, 3-0). Michelle Klinikowski scored 14 for Ledyard (2-3, 1-1).

    • Kristina Olenick had nine points for Lyman Memorial as it edged St. Bernard 30-29 in the ECC Small. Caitlyn Dittman had 15 points for St. Bernard (2-2, 1-1) and Kaitlyn Berkel scored 12.

    Boys' basketball

    • John Floyd scored a game-high 24 points, 21 in the second half, and Eddie Volkerts added 19 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, as Fitch defeated East Lyme 71-53 in the ECC Large Division. Floyd also had 15 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals for Fitch (2-1, 1-1) and Sharif Brown scored 11. Cristian Brown led East Lyme (0-3, 0-2) with 16 points.

    • Colin Sawyer had 40 points, including five 3-pointers, and Seth Lake scored 23 points with the help of seven 3-pointers to lift New London to a 112-59 rout of Stonington in the ECC Medium Division. Matt Donahue scored 23 points for Stonington (0-3, 0-2) in his first game of the season after being out injured and Robby Fry had 17. New London is 2-0, 2-0.

    • Waterford used a 28-point second quarter to gain control and beat Montville 83-49 in the ECC Medium Division. Landon Peabody led the Lancers with 17 points, Connor Lewis had 13 and Mike Gianakos and Kyle McComic scored 10 points each. Waterford trailed 19-11 after one quarter before taking a 39-33 lead at halftime. Waterford is 2-0 overall and in the ECC. TT Bowens scored a team-high 13 points for Montville (2-1, 1-1).

    • DeAnte Bruton and Mario Graham each had 29 points as Ledyard downed NFA 76-55 in the ECC Large. Phyllip Thomas scored seven for Ledyard (2-0, 2-0). Steven Fletcher had 20 points for NFA (1-2, 1-1).

    • Drake Gavin had 17 points and Jacob Ballachino scored 10 as Old Lyme downed Westbrook 68-37 in the Shoreline Conference. George Doll had nine points for Old Lyme (3-0). Liam Bell scored 12 for the White Knights (0-2).

    H.S. hockey

    • Pete Yapchanyk scored the tying and go-ahead goals and Zach Jones had a goal and two assists as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles rallied back from a three-goal deficit to beat the Shepaug Valley/Litchfield/Nonnewaug co-op 5-4. Jimmy Fitzmaurice scored twice for the Eagles (2-1) and Tyler Luke had 37 saves. Larry Nolan, Jarrett Hebert and Will Vorra each added an assist.
