    Local roundup: Fornaro sparks Coast Guard to victory

    Daytona Beach, Fla. - Meghan Fornaro scored a career-high 27 points as the Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team beat Nazareth College 75-60 in the Land of Magic Classic on Sunday.

    The Bears (3-4) finish up play in the tournament today, when they play Colby at 4 p.m. Torie Sutherland had 13 points and nine rebounds for Coast Guard.

    Men's basketball

    • Army made 14 3-pointers en route to a 93-48 win over Coast Guard at West Point. Army shot 52.2 percent from the field, forced 20 turnovers and outrebounded the Bears 41-25. The Black Knights (9-2) are now 17-0 all-time against the Coast Guard.

    The Bears were 22 of 46 overall (47.8 percent), but hit just two 3-pointers. Kevin Alvarez paced the Bears (4-6) with 16 points along with eight rebounds and David Anderson had eight points and four assists.

    Men's hockey

    • UMass-Lowell beat UConn 3-1 in the championship game of the Frozen Holiday Classic at Bridgeport. Kevin Boyle made 23 saves for UMass-Lowell, which led 3-0 before UConn's Cody Sharib scored in the final minute of play. David Drake and Ryan Tyson had assists and Rob Nichols made 35 saves for UConn (4-9-4).

    H.S. hockey

    • Pete Yapchanyk scored a pair of goals as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles beat Norwalk/McMahon 4-3 on Saturday. Zach Jones had a goal and an assist, Jimmy Fitzmaurice scored a goal, Will Vorra had two assists and Larry Nolan and Austin D'Addario also had assists for the Eagles (3-1). Tyler Luke made 36 saves for the Eagles.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Ledyard's DeAnte Bruton scored 19 points, but the Colonels lost to East Hartford 58-55 in the final of the Xavier Holiday tournament on Saturday night. Phyllip Thomas had 12 points for Ledyard (3-1).

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • NFA lost its first game of the season, falling to South Windsor 48-42 in the final of the South Windsor Holiday tournament on Saturday night. Olivia Lane had 16 points and Cebria Outlow scored 12 for NFA (6-1).
