    Local roundup: Coast Guard baseball takes care of business, reaches NEWMAC tournament

    Watertown, Mass. — Eric Vrissis pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run, as the Coast Guard Academy baseball team beat Emerson 7-2 Wednesday to secure a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.

    Coast Guard (15-12, 8-9) claimed the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Babson at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of that game will travel to top-seeded MIT on Saturday for a three-game semifinal series.

    Coast Guard got the help it needed as Babson beat Clark 12-7 to put the Bears in the tournament.

    Brendan McNeil of Pawcatuck tripled and scored in the first inning for Coast Guard and finished with two hits. Tim Duncan's two-run double in the third gave the Bears the lead for good at 3-1. Mark Behne also had two hits and Vrissis had a career-high eight strikeouts.

    In other games:

    • Ryan Goodwin had two hits and drove in three runs as Mitchell beat No. 21 Wesleyan 5-3 for its seventh straight win. Goodwin's RBI single in the top of the eighth snapped a 3-3 tie and Neftali Arroyo's homer in the ninth gave Mitchell (22-3) an insurance run.  

    • Former Fitch standout Aaron Hill had three hits and scored four runs as UConn beat UMass-Lowell 17-2. Hill was 3-for-5 with a double. Vinny Siena, Joe DeRoche-Duffin and Jon Testani homered for UConn (27-15).

    College softball

    • With a doubleheader sweep of Wheelock, Mitchell College moved one step closer to winning the New England Collegiate Conference regular-season title. Brittany Fiederlein pitched the Mariners to a pair of five-inning wins, allowing only one combined hit and throwing a perfect game in 10-0 rout in game one.

    In game one, Shannon O'Neil's two-run single, her third hit of the game, highlighted a six-run fifth inning.

    In a 19-0 win in game two, Jenny Groman went 5-for-5 and knocked in four runs while Fiederlein also had four RBI to power the Mariners (15-13, 14-2) to a season-high 19 hits.

    Mitchell can clinch the regular season title with one win in Saturday's doubleheader against Southern Vermont. 

    H.S. boys' golf

    • New London's Danny Maranda took medalist honors as the Whalers beat Grasso Tech 209-242. Maranda shot a 48 and Jordan Rogers was next for New London (2-0) with a 52. Hunter Brazee led Grasso Tech with a 54.

    • Ledyard's Kevin Simmons won medalist honors with a 41 as the Colonels beat Fitch 6-1 in an ECC Large Division match. Kyle Scanlon, Ben Gill and Jeff Mercer also won their matches for Ledyard (1-1, 1-1) and Kyle Musella won for Fitch (0-2, 0-2).

    • Old Lyme opened its season by beating St. Bernard 185-254. Old Lyme's Matt McCarthy was the medalist at 44 and teammates Graham Aird (45), Mason Swaney (47) and Max Castonguay (49) also broke 50. Nick Morrow led St. Bernard (1-1) with a 55.

    • Norwich Tech beat Vinal Tech 210-236 in a Constitution State Conference. Josh Gilot of Norwich Tech was the medalist at 49. Josh Ries was next for Norwich Tech (1-1) at 51.

    • Jake Rowe of East Lyme was the medalist with a 40 as the Vikings tied Montville 3.5-3.5. Ben Reed and Ryan Turney each shot a 46, leading Montville to a 6.5-0.5 win over Wheeler and a 4-3 loss against Bacon.

    H.S. girls' golf

    • NFA lost to Woodstock Academy 214-249. Hannah Slocum led NFA (0-1) with a 53.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Jack Fader scored seven goals and had four assists, leading Williams School to a 17-5 win over St. Andrew's. Xavier Mills had five goals and two assists, freshman Charlie Parsons had three goals and Harrison Hall scored twice for Williams.

    • Ryan Reuling scored five goals with two assists as Fitch beat RHAM 11-9. Luke Letellier scored three times, Teddi Lee had a goal and an assist and Christian Snodgras made 12 saves for Fitch (4-2).

    • Nick Schultz scored three goals and had an assist as Ledyard beat Woodstock 12-6 in an ECC Large Division game. Ian Foster and Matt Scahill each had two goals and an assist and Shane Fors scored twice for Ledyard (1-4, 1-3). 

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Sydney Cowell scored seven goals to lift Old Lyme past Fitch 16-5. Maggie Berger added five goals, Catie Quaratella two goals, Abby Berger one goal and two assists and Lauren Quaratella three assists for the Wildcats (4-0). Fitch is 1-3.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Conn College closed out its season with a 9-3 win over No. 18 Wesleyan in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Ross Thompson and John Cunningham had two goals each and Bobby Bleistein made 15 saves for Conn (4-11, 2-9).

    • Junior Louis DePaolis and sophomore Quinn Hathcock each scored three goals to lead Coast Guard to its second straight win. The Bears beat Massachusetts Maritime 14-5 to improve to 4-9 overall. Sophomore Blaise Curtis added two goals and an assist.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Conn College completed its season with a 15-7 loss to Wesleyan in a NESCAC game. Taylor Thomas had three goals and five assists and Hannah Donegan scored twice for Conn (4-11, 1-9). 

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard wrapped up its regular season with a 6-1 win over Clark, securing a first-round bye for the Bears in the NEWMAC tournament. Robert Renfrow, Mark Guentert, Weston Fortna and Michael Melamphy singled singles matches for the Bears (8-6, 4-2).

    • Orson Sinclair of New London won at No. 3 singles to lead Mitchell College past Newbury College 5-4 in the NECC. Michael Edwards of Bozrah also won his singles match for the Mariners (6-4, 4-3).
