    H.S. roundup: Whalers qualify for state girls' tennis tourney

    Norwich —The New London girls' tennis team clinched its first state tournament berth with a 4-3 win over Norwich Free Academy on Thursday.

    The Whalers (8-6) have two matches remaining before playing in the CIAC Class S tournament. New London hadn't qualified since girls' tennis became a spring sport for Eastern Connecticut Conference teams in 2001.

    Lillian James, Susane Ortizdevillate and Tsering Buti won their matches for New London along with the doubles team of Olivia Santana and Yesha Patel. Kaelan Greene won her match for NFA (2-13) along with the doubles teams of Kristina Jacobs-Tayla Wilson and Alyssa Lanphear-Kaitlyn McGuire.

    Baseball

    • Montville clinched the top seed for the ECC tournament with a 9-0 win over Wheeler. Doug DelaCruz (3-0) pitched six shutout innings for the win, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Jordan Zeppieri and TT Bowens (three runs) were each 3-for-4 with two RBI and Eric Ross (two runs) and Jeremy Sagun had two hits each for Montville (17-2). Wheeler is 4-15.

    • Norwich Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Abbott Tech 8-7 in the Constitution State Conference quarterfinals. The winning run scored when John Staubley was hit by a pitch. Staubley went 2-for-2 while Evan Lepage had two hits and two RBI and Steve Sieczkowski had two hits and drove in the tying run with a groundout. Reliever Brandon Bastien pitched three innings and earned the win. Norwich Tech is at No. 1 Wilcox Tech in Tuesday’s semifinals.

    • Michael Bruce had a single, double and an RBI and Trevor Bolduc pitched a three-hitter over six innings in Ledyard’s 5-1 victory over Woodstock Academy in the ECC Large Division. Nick Smith, Gavin Jarry also had two hits each for Ledyard (12-8, 5-5) and Anthony Viteritto doubled.Conor Hanlon pitched a complete game for Woodstock.

    • New London got off to a fast start, scoring three in the first and five in the second, in a 15-2 win over Tourtellotte. Aiden Brennan had three hits and Quantique White had a single, double, triple and four RBI for the Whalers (10-9).

    Softball

    • Norwich Tech advanced to the semifinals of the CSC tournament with a 10-9 win over No. 6 Abbott Tech. No. 3 Norwich Tech plays at No. 2 Wilcox Tech on Tuesday. Vanessa Gumbs singled, tripled and drove in three runs, Kerri Bellerose was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Abbey Pater doubled for Norwich Tech.

    • Grasso Tech qualified for the state tournament with a 10-2 win over Metro Learning Center. Samantha Martinez had three hits and drove in two runs, Tabitha Ford had two hits and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Ashley Cambisaca doubled for Grasso (9-10).

    • Shea Gendron and Brittani Majcher each belted solo home runs to highlight a six-run fifth inning, powering NFA past North Branford 13-0. Gendron also had a double and Megan Weir pitched a complete game for the Wildcats (15-4), allowing two hits while striking out 10 and walking none.

    • Plainfield scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to beat New London 17-2 in an ECC Medium Division game. Tiffany McPherson singled, tripled and scored a run and Riley Barnes had a run-scoring double for New London (0-17, 0-10).   

    • Hannah Meyers had three hits and four RBI to lift Montville past Valley Regional 10-8. Katrina Awad also had three hits and Stephanie Szot had a single, double and two RBI while Alex Clemons had a single and two RBI for the Indians (12-7). On Wednesday, Awad pitched a five-hitter and struck out six as Montville beat Killingly 11-0. Szot and Emily Bigelow had three hits each.

    Boys' tennis

    • Waterford rode a doubles sweep to a 4-3 win over St. Bernard. The duos of Matthew Hausmann-Samson Herbert, Evan Burdsall-Mike Castelpoggi and Dylan Vitale-Mike Gianakos were victorious and Hugh Sokolski won at No. 4 singles for the Lancers (16-1). Nick and Alex Zuczek won singles matches for the Saints. 

    • NFA lost to Woodstock in an ECC Large Division match on Wednesday, 5-2. Kevin Wu won his match along with the doubles team of Heet Dave-Imran Haydar for NFA (2-13, 0-8).

    Boys' golf

    • Stonington beat New London 7-0 in the ECC Medium Division finale for both teams. Sam Ognisty was the medalist with a 35 and Jack Ognisty, Noah Blanchette, Will Cavaliere and Tyler Snelgrove also won their matches for the Bears (14-2, 8-2). New London is 4-11, 2-8.

    • Old Lyme beat Haddam-Killingworth in a Shoreline Conference match, 169-182. Graham Aird led Old Lyme (8-8, 5-2) with a 40, Mason Swaney shot 42, Matt McCarthy shot 43 and Will Roberts shot 44.

    • Grasso Tech lost to Windham Tech in a CSC match, 214-242.  Hunter Brazee led Grasso with a 57.

    • Griswold beat Wheeler 4-3 in a ECC Small Division match, taking the medal point 208-217. Mike Anderson, Peyton Mulhern and Matt Worobey won their matches for Wheeler (6-8, 3-5).

    Girls' golf

    • NFA dropped a pair of matches at Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug, losing to Woodstock, 223-260, and Daniel Hand, 201-260. Hannah Slocum had the low score for the Wildcats, shooting a 56. Hand's Gabby Martin was the medalist with a 43.
